What skills and experience we're looking for
The Ladder School is a forward thinking, inclusive and life-changing Alternative Provision school. We work with children who need a second chance to be a success at school. We are a happy, warm, welcoming school and value the relationships we build every day with our colleagues, the students and their families.
Due to expanding numbers, we are looking for an enthusiastic and committed teacher of Science that can teach up to GCSE level. The curriculum has been fully planned and resourced with every teacher having their own new and well resourced classroom to teach in. Class sizes are small (usually a maximum of 10) and every class comes with their own Learning Coach who attends all lessons.
We welcome qualified teachers, including those looking for full-time and/or part-time work; we are also happy to consider applicants without a Science specialism or have QTS so long as you are willing to work towards qualification. Returners to the profession are also welcomed and will receive our full support through our induction programme; we are a family-friendly employer. We particularly welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and with protected characteristics. We are looking for the right person to work as part of our amazing team.
An ability or wish to teach in a second subject also welcomed – we are a school where you can thrive and grow.
The successful candidate will:
- Be a fantastic teacher with an ability to motivate pupils to make progress;

- Have a positive in outlook and believe in the power of education to change the path of Alternative Provision students’ lives;
- Be a team player prepared to work with colleagues and share ideas and resources;
- Like children, even the tricky ones!

We are an Alternative Provision Free School located in Walsall Town Centre. The Ladder School was established in January 2019 and has now moved in to a brand new, purpose-built building based on the edge of Walsall town centre where there are excellent links to the local and wider community. Over the coming years we will continue to grow and become the ‘go to place’ for alternative provision in the borough.
At The Ladder School, we recognise that mainstream school does not suit all young people and we are here to offer a second chance. We work on a commissioning basis, that means that a school or the Local Authority must approach to place a student. Unfortunately, we cannot accept direct referrals from parents/carers.
The staff work incredibly hard to ensure our students make the most of the opportunities that they get whist they are with us. Unlike other alternative provisions, we offer a range of GCSE courses, supplemented with some vocational courses to ensure students get a well-rounded education.
We are a positive environment, that uses praise and encouragement to enable our students to see things differently. We have a set of values that underpin everything we do.
