Teacher of Spanish job summary

One of the top schools in the East Midlands both by Progress8 score and the Times Parent Power Survey, Bourne Grammar School occupies an enviable position in the South of Lincolnshire, close to the urban centre of Peterborough but adjacent also to the beautiful landscape of Rutland and the town of Stamford. The student population reflects this, with in increasingly diverse make up of young people eager to learn and perform highly as a result of an outstanding quality of education.

Bourne Grammar’s mission is anchored in a desire to provide the “best atmosphere, best support and best results” possible for all students, an objective that runs through all of the school’s operational and strategic priorities. This produces young adults who are “well rounded, well qualified and well prepared”. An extensive trips, co-curricular and personal development programme is on offer to help ensure this which includes a Sixth Form Electives (enrichment) programme, and the quality of the school’s pastoral care is excellent. Kindness and inclusivity are core features of the school’s ethos.

Applications are invited to join the Spanish Department, rated as an outstanding department by OFSTED in the most recent OFSTED inspection in October 2022. The department strives to be at the forefront of teaching and learning in the School and is passionate about teaching Spanish in a dynamic and inspirational way.

Spanish is a core subject in Bourne Grammar School which follows our School’s ethos of developing a challenging and academically ambitious curriculum for our students. Therefore, we want to inspire in our pupils a love for languages and raise their awareness of different cultures in the world. We aim to create opportunities for students to enrich their personal development through exposure to a new language and culture.

The Spanish department is well established. We are a team of nine teachers and one Language Assistant. There are four native speakers in the department. We pride ourselves on our ethos of supportive and collaborative working and we have a wide variety of resources to support teaching and learning.

Our curriculum is academically ambitious in such a way that at all Key Stages, Spanish provision goes beyond the text books that we follow and extension tasks are a regular part of lessons and homework. There is a heavy use of Target Language in the classroom both by pupils and teachers. Some lessons are delivered almost entirely in Spanish. In KS3 there is an introduction of lots of grammar which is consolidated and built upon in KS4. From Year 7, students are exposed to grammatical terms and are expected to understand and use these when referring to language. At GCSE level, the top sets are taught an academically demanding course which goes far beyond the limitations of the GCSE in order to prepare our top linguists for A Level. At A Level, our students discuss current and complex topics with a native speaker and have to access and understand a variety of authentic materials.

Classes in Year 7 have 6-hour periods per fortnight. From Years 8 to 11, students receive 5-hour periods per fortnight. Spanish is a popular option at A-level and students receive 9 hours per fortnight with a weekly speaking session with our Language Assistant in small groups. In Year 8 students have the opportunity to go to Spain to further enrich their studies. A-Level students also get the opportunity to visit Seville to enhance their understanding of the cultural elements of the course whilst receiving language lessons.

Grades are excellent at both GCSE and A-level. In the last set of results, 47% of the GCSE cohort achieved a grade 7-9. At A-level, 80% of our students achieved A*-A.

We are an oversubscribed mixed selective school serving Bourne, Stamford and Peterborough. Our students are well-behaved and motivated and are taught in modern and well-resourced facilities. The school offers 240 places to students in Year 7 and, with a growing Sixth Form of over 500, has expanded to become one of the largest grammar schools in the country. The vast majority of Year 11 students transfer into our Sixth Form where students are offered a choice of 26 A-Level subjects.

The best atmosphere, the best support, the best results

This is our purpose statement - we have no long or complicated mission statement. The order of the purpose statement is deliberate; we believe that if we get the atmosphere and support right then, given our able students and committed staff, good results will follow. The atmosphere is special and cherished by us all and something that interview candidates often remark upon. We are a large and busy school and our students are well-behaved, motivated and want to be here and their parents/carers want them to be here. Most of the students, most of the time, want to learn and enjoy lessons which are well-taught and engaging.

The teaching staff body numbers around 100 teachers supported by 40 non-teaching colleagues. All teaching staff are subject specialists and are only required to teach their own subject. Staff absence is very low, as is staff turnover. Staff who do leave often do so for promoted posts. All teaching staff at Bourne Grammar School are issued with a laptop and other benefits including no breaktime, lunchtime or bus supervision duties and free on-site parking. Tea and coffee are freely available in our two large staffrooms.
