What the school offers its staff
At Reading School, we want to teach our students that learning languages brings them skills for life which will broaden their horizons. Our Senior Leaders and the Governors of the school are committed to sustaining the broadest possible range of languages and promoting these at each key stage.
We therefore expose all Year 7 students to French, German, Mandarin and Spanish in the first term, continuing with three Modern Languages until the end of the year, and specialising in two Modern Languages in Year 8.
At Key Stage 4, at least one language option (from French, German, Mandarin, Spanish or Latin) is compulsory for all students, and many choose two. Our numbers opting for A Level French, German and Spanish are stable and viable, with students regularly deciding to pursue languages at university.
We are really proud of our languages team and are certain that our staff have a curriculum model encourages language acquisition and metacognition.
We pride ourselves in making the learning environment both fun and challenging to stretch our very talented pupils and spark their curiosity.
Culture is an essential aspect of our ethos for language teaching. Students enjoy:
• Día De Los Muertos lessons in November
• Richly cross-curricular ‘March Music Madness’ in the spring
• A Language Football League in May
• International Journalism workshops for senior students
There are many ways our students get to explore the rich Spanish-speaking world, but the best way to practise languages and grow more motivated and confident is to immersion in the target language.
Our students are very fortunate to experience several trips abroad on their language learning journey: a cultural trip to Salamanca in Year 8, an exchange with our partner school in Albacete in Year 10 and Year 12, with cultural visits during the day for Year 10 and work experience for Year 12.
We also collaborate with other local schools for extra-curricular events, including debates, translation workshops, drama competition or study days. We work with interns from Reading University to support our KS4 students and benefit from Alumni coming back to share their inspirational journeys and how languages have benefited them.
Our students are well behaved and motivated. Many come from families where English is a second language, and all benefit from the lens that language provides. We are privileged that we are a community where language learning is valued and enjoyed.
Within and beyond our MFL department, Reading School has a clear educational philosophy and a deeply rooted commitment to social mobility. We need the newest member of our team to share this ethos, and to do all they can to use their expertise to shape the lives and outlooks of students from diverse backgrounds, so that all can live happy and fulfilled lives that make society better.
In all we do we seek to nurture character and develop academic excellence, and we know that what we do really matters. More than 10% of our Year 7 students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and we are proud of the difference that we make. In 2025, the school was rated the Sunday Times South East State School of the Year.
