What skills and experience we're looking for

About The Role:

Truro and Penwith Academy Trust, in partnership with the Local Governing Board of Cardinham School, is seeking to appoint a committed and enthusiasticTeaching Assistant and Lunchtime Supervisorto join our team.

Cardinham School is a small, welcoming primary school set in a beautiful rural location near Bodmin. Our strong sense of community, supportive staff, and kind pupils create a warm and inclusive environment where children are encouraged to achieve their best.

In this combined role, you will support classroom learning in the mornings, working alongside the class teacher to deliver lessons, assist individual pupils or groups, and help create an engaging and supportive learning environment. During the lunchtime period, you will supervise children, promote positive behaviour and play, and ensure a safe, calm, and happy atmosphere.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Patient, positive, and nurturing
  • Able to follow guidance but also show initiative
  • Committed to supporting children’s learning and wellbeing
  • A good team player, willing to be flexible and proactive

This is a key role in helping our children thrive both in their learning and in their wider school life.

About You:

You are someone who enjoys working with children and takes pride in supporting their growth—both in the classroom and during less structured times like lunch and play. You’re dependable, warm, and approachable, with a calm presence and a clear understanding of the needs of primary-aged pupils.

In the classroom, you’re able to follow instructions from teaching staff while using your initiative to spot where help is needed. You’re comfortable assisting with learning activities, encouraging pupils to stay engaged and supporting those who may need a bit of extra help to succeed.

At lunchtime, you’ll be confident managing groups of children, encouraging positive interactions, and stepping in calmly and fairly when needed. You understand that unstructured times are as important as lessons for children’s social development.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has a positive and supportive attitude
  • Works well as part of a team and communicates effectively with adults and children
  • Is proactive, patient, and able to adapt to the needs of the day
  • Understands the importance of emotional wellbeing alongside academic progress

At Cardinham Primary School, we encourage children to:

‘Grow your mind; aim high’

Set in the centre of Cornwall, our small school caters for the children of the village of Cardinham, outlying farms and hamlets and children from larger towns who can benefit from the friendly, caring, nurturing and family atmosphere of which we are proud.

We pride ourselves on our involvement in the community. The Parish Hall is used on a regular basis for our annual summer performance and Key Stage 1 nativity. The Church is used for Harvest festival and Christmas concerts.

The beautiful Cardinham Woods are within safe walking distance from our school and we aim to utilise the outdoors at every given opportunity.

Our behaviour management is based on emphasising the positive and drawing attention to what children are doing well, not on criticising their faults. We follow the message, ‘treat children as they might become, not as they are’.
