Teaching Assistant job summary

As a Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting our students on their journey to success. You’ll work closely with teachers to deliver engaging lessons, provide tailored support for individual students, and foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment. You will help to implement individual education, health, and care plans tailored to each pupil.

This is a fixed term role, working for 12 hours per week, term time only.

About us

St Joseph's Catholic Voluntary Academy is a primary school located in Derby City Centre. We are an Ofsted-rated Goodschool. We strive to enable every child to reach their own potential. Whilst we are proud, and rightly so, of our academic achievements, which continue to be among the best in the City, developing the whole child is equally, if not more important. Critical to this, however, is the support we give the children as they continue their spiritual journey by helping them develop a fuller understanding of their faiths and beliefs.

As a Teaching Assistant, you’ll:

  • Support pupils with learning needs.
  • Help implement individual education, health, and care plans tailored to each pupil.
  • Adapt resources, learning activities, and communication methods to meet individual needs.
  • Support pupils who use alternative communication systems.
  • Encourage participation, independence, social interaction, and emotional wellbeing.
  • Work closely with teachers, therapists, healthcare professionals, and families to provide consistent support and achieve the best possible outcomes.

What we’re looking for:

  • Enthusiasm for working with children and helping them achieve their best.
  • A proactive, adaptable approach to supporting both staff and students.
  • A willingness to embrace and promote our Catholic ethos (you don’t need to be Catholic but must respect our values).

Closing Date: 7th October 2026 at 9.00am

Visits are warmly welcomed so you can see for yourself, and we encourage you to talk to us to learn more about the role. Please contact Tracey Churchill through helpline@jph.srscmat.co.uk to arrange a visit or to discuss the role further.
