Teaching Assistant job summary

Burbage Primary School is seeking to appoint a caring, enthusiastic and committed Teaching Assistant to join our team from September 2026. This is a temporary, fixed-term position for one year with the possibility of becoming a permanent position, working 30 hours per week across five days.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting children’s learning and wellbeing and who can work effectively alongside teaching staff to help pupils thrive in the classroom and across school life. The successful candidate will support pupils individually and in groups, help promote independence, and contribute to high-quality learning and teaching. These responsibilities reflect the core purpose of the role set out in the attached job description.

Burbage Primary School is a welcoming and inclusive school community with the motto “Building confidence; inspiring achievement.”

The school’s vision is for pupils to grow up as happy, kind young people with empathy for others, in a safe and supportive environment where they develop resilience, independence, self-belief and aspiration, regardless of background, ability or need. The website also highlights the importance of strong partnerships between school, families and the wider community, with everyone working together to achieve this shared vision.

Burbage is proud to be part of the Embark Federation, working closely with its wider family of schools while remaining at the heart of the local community. The school's curriculum is ambitious, inspiring and exciting, built on positivity, nurture and mutual respect, and enriched by educational visits, special visitors and a wide range of broader experiences. Through its project-based approach, the school aims to help pupils become collaborators, innovators, leaders and risk-takers, while fostering a lifelong love of learning.

The post involves working collaboratively with teachers and other staff to support pupils’ learning, engagement and achievement. The successful candidate will help clarify instructions, provide learning resources and teaching aids, support pupils to maintain concentration and complete tasks, contribute to the implementation of specific learning targets, and provide pastoral support so that children feel safe, secure and ready to learn. The role also includes supporting pupils beyond the classroom so they can interact positively with others and take part fully in school life.

The successful applicant will also work closely with teachers by helping to plan and deliver suitable support programmes, monitoring pupils’ responses to learning activities, recording achievements accurately, and providing regular feedback on progress, difficulties and successes. They will help promote positive behaviour in line with school policies, support the preparation of teaching and learning materials, maintain classroom resources and equipment, and build constructive relationships with parents and carers.

We are looking for someone who can form respectful, professional and trusting relationships with children and adults, work constructively as part of a team, and respond positively to feedback. The person specification also requires effective oral and written communication, good organisational and time management skills, and the ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries.

Prospective candidates are warmly encouraged to visit the school. Please contact our School Business Manager, Emma, to arrange a visit on 01298 22278 or via email.
