Teaching Assistant job summary

We are looking for a Teaching Assistant (level 2) who can work for just a short time each morning supporting the teacher in delivering lessons. These will mostly be maths lessons and we are looking for someone who is confident teaching this subject to Year 5 and Year 6 pupils. This particular vacancy is dependent on EHCP funding and the hours are limited (8:45-10:35 each day). However, this is an exciting opportunity to join our thriving, popular school and there may be future possibilities of extending the contract and overtime.

The core part of the role will be working under the teacher's direction to support specific pupils or groups of pupils with their maths learning. The school has an excellent reputation for key stage 2 results, which have been consistently high over a 9-year period. For example, 100% of children achieved at least the expected standard in maths (and reading) in 2024 SATs. The teacher, who is also the maths lead and Senior Teacher, is highly skilled in teaching the subject. This is an superb opportunity to gain high quality experience in a very well-run classroom.

Behaviour in the class is excellent and recent comments from visitors have included, "Thank you for the most wonderful afternoon, Pensford Primary. Probably one of the most perfectly behaved classes I have ever taught" [workshop leader] and "Please do book me again, I had a great day and would love to come back!" [supply teacher].

Wider responsibilities include:

  • Attending to the pupils’ personal needs, and implementing related personal programmes, including social, health, physical, hygiene, first aid and welfare matters
  • Undertaking programmes linked to local and national learning strategies to support pupils to achieve learning goals, recording achievement & progress and feeding back to the teacher
  • Supervising and providing particular support for pupils including those with special needs, ensuring their safety and access to learning
  • Encouraging pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher
  • Creating and maintaining a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment, in accordance with lesson plans
  • Playground supervision - encouraging friendships and play and ensuring a safe environment.

We can offer you:

  • Children who are very respectful and willing to learn
  • A school where staff enjoy working as part of a dedicated, supportive and creative team, aiming for excellence
  • A highly supportive and encouraging class teacher and leadership
  • An excellent Employee Assistance Programme offering a wealth of advice & support

We warmly encourage visits to our school so you can see for yourself all that we can offer. These could take place in the half term break if convenient. Please contact the school office to arrange a convenient time.

Pensford School is a co-educational primary catering for children between the ages of 4 and 11 years. Currently we have 4 mixed age classes (Year R, Years 1 and 2, Years 3 and 4 and Years 5 and 6). It is situated 6 miles south of Bristol on the A37. Our period buildings have had extensive refurbishment over the past few years and provide attractive, contemporary learning spaces. Our grounds have been redesigned and developed to create a stimulating outdoor learning environment. In June 2019, we joined The Partnership Trust, which is a multi-academy Trust.
We enjoy close links with our local community including established collaborative partnerships with other schools in the locality through which we endeavour to deliver the best outcomes for all primary age children in the Chew Valley area. The collaboration supports working with a range of professionals and building skills as well as opportunities for all staff. The children in our communities are at the very heart of everything we do within the school and the cluster.
Our vision for Pensford Primary is to be a high achieving, vibrant learning community in which children are nurtured, motivated and have outstanding expectations for themselves and others. We believe that every member of our school community has a right to achieve their potential in an atmosphere which balances challenge with support. We aim to provide a climate for learning, which engages, inspires and motivates children.
We believe that strong and effective home-school partnerships are essential to the successful academic, social and emotional development of the children in our care. We work hard to ensure parents and carers are involved in our school at many different levels by holding curriculum workshops and encouraging parent helpers during the school day, being involved in the PSA (Pensford School Association) and on the governing body.
We have very high aspirations for all of the children and staff in our school. The entire school community works together to ensure that the children reach their full potential. Our goal is to develop life-long learning characteristics in children that encourage self-leadership skills, helping each child to feel successful as individuals, learners and critical thinkers.
