What skills and experience we're looking for

At St Luke's we want candidates who are committed to being "Champions for Every Child" and want to make a difference to children's lives.

We expect candidates who apply for a Level 2 Teaching Assistant to have experience of working with children (usually in another school or nursery setting, either mainstream or special).

Level 2 Teaching Assistants are required to support all aspects of support for children in the classroom with their work, at lunch times and in other planned interventions throughout the school day, they also support with personal care needs. Level 2 Teaching Assistants work with pupils with a wide range of needs and with different age groups, from 2 years old to 11 years old.

Children Learn in their class groups throughout the day. Some children may have specific interventions, such as hydrotherapy, speech and language therapy, sensory circuits or access to some of our sensory spaces.

Class sizes range from 8 children to 12 children, dependent on needs. Each class has at least 3 Teaching Assistants, with some classes having more.

What the school offers its staff

We have a Professional Development lead who will organise all of your training, whilst you are at St Luke's. We understand that most people who start at St Luke's may not have worked in a special school before and therefore we offer a comprehensive induction package.We have training or Team Time every Tuesday Night (4:00 to 4:50pm) and we have three training days and 4 twilight training sessions each academic year. We use these to support training and development.Our training includes the following areas:

  • Communication (Speech and Language) Training
  • Trauma Informed Practice
  • Meeting Sensory Needs
  • Understanding Child Development
  • Meeting the needs of the children
  • Level 1 Team Teach
  • Moving and Handling Training
  • Safeguarding Training
