What skills and experience we're looking for

We are looking for a teaching assistant to enhance our SEN support across school, working in our Year 4 Class to support a pupil who has additional needs. It is initially up until Christmas with a possibility of it being extended - this depends on how well the pupil settles and other staffing needs.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone to join a happy working environment who are determined to put children’s needs first - learning with the children, their families and class teacher. Working with children brings so many rewards and it will take the successful candidate only hours to realise what a difference they can make. The role would be perfect for someone who loves working with children, is accepting of differences and diversity, has the resilience to deal with the unexpected and wants to learn about neurodiversity.

The successful candidate will need to evidence:

  • English and maths to GCSE C level or equivalent.

  • Real enthusiasm, patience and resilience for working with children.

  • An understanding of safeguarding principles and a willingness to undertake an enhanced DBS check.

Aims of the role:

  • To support the student(s) to make progress and achieve their full potential

  • To keep the student(s) safe and well at school

  • To continue to develop age related appropriate self-help skills

  • To promote increasing independence, self-confidence and mobility within a safe environment

  • To develop awareness of risk and danger in various settings

  • To continue to develop skills to access the curriculum effectively

  • To develop concentration skills

  • To develop the student’s enthusiasm to learn

The right person;

  • Will work 1:1 and in groups supporting a child(ren)

  • Will possibly already have experience working with pupils with social communication difficulties and associated difficulties.

  • Be able to improve the communication and interaction of the supported pupil under the direction of the teacher.

  • May have experience of working with pupils with Special Educational Needs and of delivering a personalised curriculum either in SEN settings or mainstream school.

  • Will support the sensory needs of the pupil

  • Will be able to challenge the cognition and learning of the pupil

  • Is flexible, pro-active and hands-on

  • Has vision, energy and enthusiasm for this challenge and has excellent organisational and interpersonal skills

Further responsibilities:

  • To follow the policies, procedures and guidelines of Rawmarsh Thorogate Primary School.

  • Any other duties which may be required from time to time.

  • To work within and encourage the school's Equal Opportunity Policy and contribute to diversity policies and programmes in relation to discriminatory behaviour.

  • To carry out the duties and responsibilities of the post in accordance with the school's Health and Safety guidance and legislation.

  • Monitor any problems and difficulties reporting these to teaching staff.

The duties and responsibilities outlined above do not represent a full list of the tasks the post holder will be expected to perform. It is also recognised that the duties of all posts are subject to change from time to time. Alterations to duties and responsibilities and performance of similar tasks within the scope of and at the same level will be expected.

Experience in working with children would be an advantage.
