Teaching Assistant job summary

We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic Teaching Assistant to join our friendly and supportive team at St Nicholas Church of England Primary Academy. This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young people and support high‑quality learning across the school.

As a Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with class teachers to support pupils’ learning, wellbeing, and development. You will help create a positive, inclusive classroom environment and provide tailored support to individual pupils or small groups, including those with additional needs.

This post is for 25 hours per week, Monday to Friday, term time only (38 weeks per year) but there is a possibility for it to be more hours per week, this will be discussed at interview.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support teaching and learning in the classroom under the direction of the class teacher
  • Work in small groups to help pupils access the curriculum
  • Assist with planning and delivering learning activities
  • Help maintain a safe, supportive and stimulating learning environment
  • Support pupils with SEN, behavioural, or emotional needs as required
  • Contribute to assessments, record‑keeping, and reporting on pupil progress
  • Supervise pupils during break times, transitions, and school activities
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and external agencies

About You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Holds an NVQ Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning, or an equivalent relevant Level 3 qualification, which is the standard we would normally expect for this role.
  • Has a good standard of English and mathematics and can confidently support learning across the KS2 curriculum.
  • Passionate about helping children learn and succeed
  • Patient, empathetic, and committed to inclusive education
  • Able to build positive relationships with pupils and colleagues
  • Confident supporting learning across a range of ages and abilities
  • Organised, proactive, and willing to take initiative
  • A good communicator with strong interpersonal skills

St Nicholas CE Primary Academy, as part of Aquila, The Diocese of Canterbury Academies Trust, is situated in the heart of New Romney, set in beautiful surroundings, and is well-resourced to meet the needs of its 15 classes and 400+ children, in this well-maintained school judged Good with Outstanding features by OFSTED (May 2019).
