Art Technician - Join Jane Austen College to Support Creative Learning!


As an Art Technician at Jane Austen College, you will provide essential support to our teaching staff, helping to prepare lessons, maintain equipment, and ensure the smooth running of the Art department. You’ll assist with practical activities, manage materials and resources, and help display pupils’ work, contributing directly to their creative learning experience.


This full-time role also involves overseeing stock, supporting health and safety procedures, and helping pupils safely use equipment. It’s a hands-on position ideal for someone organised, proactive, and passionate about supporting young people in a dynamic school environment.


What You’ll Be Doing

  • Prepare materials and equipment for practical art lessons.
  • Assist teaching staff in lessons and provide guidance to pupils on equipment use.
  • Maintain and organise storage areas, tools, and pupil work.
  • Support the display of pupils’ artwork around the school.
  • Receive, check, and store deliveries of materials safely and efficiently.
  • Oversee health and safety of equipment and work areas, reporting any issues.
  • Carry out basic administrative tasks such as stock control, ordering, and record keeping.
  • Supervise pupils during exhibitions, displays, and practical activities when required.
  • Advise staff and pupils on materials, compounds, and correct use of equipment.


About You:

The ideal candidate will have experience working with secondary-age pupils and supporting staff in a classroom setting. They should be organised, proactive, and confident in using a range of tools, equipment, and ICT systems. Good literacy skills, an understanding of health and safety procedures, and the ability to assist with creative practical work are essential. A friendly, flexible approach and a willingness to support pupils and staff in a busy Art department will help them thrive in this role.


Essential:

  • Experience working with secondary-age pupils.
  • GCSE-level education in English and Maths (or equivalent), with good literacy skills.
  • Organised, self-motivated, and able to assist staff in practical art activities.
  • ICT literate and confident using classroom technology and equipment.
  • Understanding of classroom roles, health and safety procedures, and willingness to participate in training.


Desirable:

  • Completion of the DfE Teacher Assistant Induction Programme.
  • GCSE or A-level qualification in Art or a related subject.
  • First Aid trained.
  • Knowledge and experience using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Understanding of how to support pupils with additional needs in creative tasks.
