Department Information
Biology has a team of experienced specialist teachers and two technicians. The teachers are passionate about Biology and believe that learning Biology should be engaging and fun. Our lessons are challenging and varied, with high standards of teaching and learning, and we support each other, sharing ideas and resources.
The department has five well-equipped modern laboratories, a large staff office and a dedicated prep room. We make good use of practical work and the school’s excellent ICT resources to support imaginative and innovative teaching. We also organise a field trip in each key stage (including a residential trip to Malam Tarn in Y12) to enrich the practical experience of our students.
In Biology, we follow the Edexcel GCSE (9-1) specification. Achievement is very high; in recent years Biology students have achieved a 100% pass rate at GCSE with 98% of grades at A*-B, 71% A*-A (grades 7-9 in the new system).
Over 300 students study Biology at A-level, following the Edexcel “B” A-level specification. Our students achieve good results at A-level, with over 43% of grades at A*-B. Almost all A-level Biology students continue to University, many studying medicine or related degrees and various branches of science.
The post-holder would be responsible for teaching Biology as part of the ‘Discover’ Faculty. Results in the faculty are very strong. Experienced colleagues provide wide-ranging expertise, which is shared throughout the faculty and department.
We would like to appoint an outstanding Temporary Teacher of Biology. The department is always looking at ways of developing its curriculum and widening the experience for students so expert subject knowledge and a passion to lead extra-curricular activities in Biology are highly desirable. We take great pride in providing our students with a first class education and instilling them with a love of learning.
Consideration will be given to both experienced teachers and NQTs who wish to develop their teaching expertise in an outstanding school.

We are delighted to have been named “Secondary School Of The Year”, “Soaring 57 places in the UK rankings to 77” out of approx 6000 secondary schools (state and independent) in the latest Sunday Times Parent Power Guide.
And for the second year running we are ranked No 2 in the North of England.
This is a fabulous accolade to the whole school community and just reward for years of hard work from staff, students and indeed parents.
The survey includes both GCSE and A level results and is nationally noted as a true measure of school performance using metrics of most interest to parents when selecting a school.
“Such accolades are very pleasing and we are delighted to be recognised, but they only come about because of the week in week out hard work from students and staff and I salute my colleagues and students, they are an exceptional team.” Mr Roberts, Headteacher.
