What skills and experience we're looking for
Main Purpose of the Role
The VI Resources Teaching Assistant will be responsible for adapting teaching resources for a visually impaired child in Year 3. The role ensures that the pupil can access the curriculum effectively, in line with their peers.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the class teacher to modify and prepare lesson materials ahead of time.
- Use specialist software to translate Word and PowerPoint documents into Braille.
- Upload adapted documents to the pupil’s BrailleNote computer and produce hard copies using an embosser where required.
- Create accessible charts and images by drawing or tracing onto special paper and processing them through a Zychem machine to produce raised lines.
- Work closely with the Sensory Service team and school staff to ensure the best support for the pupil.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with multiple stakeholders across different agencies.
- Support the Pupil during one break time and one lunchtime per week.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Strong computer skills, including with Word and PowerPoint.
- Confidence in working with technology and a willingness to learn new software and specialist equipment.
- Ability to work collaboratively with various teams, including school staff and external support services.
- GCSEs in English and Maths (minimum requirement); A-levels or degree qualifications are desirable.
- Some knowledge or experience of the National Curriculum for Key Stage 2.
- Experience working with children in a primary school, particularly Key Stage 2 (desirable).
- Interest in learning Braille (desirable) – the school will fund online training modules.

- Excellent communication skills with the ability to retain and apply key information quickly.
- Adaptability and resilience in a fast-paced school environment.
- A calm, friendly, and professional demeanour.
Desirable Criteria:
- A-level, BTEC, NVQ or other qualifications
- Experience working with children in a primary school setting, particularly Key Stage 2.
- Some knowledge of the National Curriculum for Key Stage 2.
- Interest in learning Braille (school-funded online training available).
- Experience using specialist equipment for visually impaired learners.
