Website & Digital Content Officer job summary

We are looking to appoint a creative, organised and proactive Website & Digital Content Officer to take responsibility for the day-to-day development, management and content of our websites and wider digital platforms.

We are looking for someone who can look at what we are trying to achieve, understand our audiences, develop ideas and turn them into engaging digital content.

You will work closely with our PR and Marketing Manager and colleagues across the Trust to plan, create and deliver digital projects. This could involve developing a new aspect of our website, planning content for an upcoming campaign, creating and editing photographs and videos, improving existing webpages, developing a new digital resource or identifying ways we can make better use of our websites — including developing a brand-new site.

You will need to be creative and confident in developing ideas, but also highly organised, able to take a project from an initial idea through to planning, content creation, development and completion.

What You'll Be Doing

Website management and development

  • Take day-to-day responsibility for maintaining and developing the Trust's websites.
  • Create and update pages, landing pages, news, events and other website content.
  • Work primarily with WordPress and Elementor, using plugins and existing functionality to create engaging digital experiences.
  • Identify opportunities to improve website structure, navigation, content and user experience.
  • Plan and develop new website sections and digital projects from initial idea through to completion.
  • Ensure website content is accurate, accessible, engaging and aligned with the Trust's brand and communications.
  • Support the ongoing development of the Department for Education's national English Hub website.
  • Manage and develop the staff and student intranet using Microsoft SharePoint and wider Microsoft 365 tools.
  • Use HTML and CSS, and where appropriate JavaScript, to make content and layout improvements.
  • Support website accessibility and SEO, ensuring content is easy to find, understand and use.

Digital content creation

  • Create compelling, well-written digital content that brings the Trust's work, schools, programmes and initiatives to life.
  • Use storytelling to bring together words, photography, video and other visual content, creating engaging narratives that capture attention and communicate a clear message.
  • Develop content that goes beyond simply presenting information, considering how a story should be told, what the audience needs to understand and how writing and imagery can work together to achieve the desired impact.
  • Adapt writing style, tone and content for different audiences, platforms and purposes, from informative website pages to engaging stories about pupils, schools and Trust initiatives.
  • Plan and create photography, video and other visual content to support campaigns, projects and website development.
  • Edit images and video into content ready to use across websites, social media and other digital platforms.
  • Identify what type of content will work best for different audiences and platforms.
  • Work with staff and pupils to gather stories, information, photography and other content.
  • Develop content plans for specific projects and campaigns, ensuring that content is created and delivered at the right time.
  • Support the wider PR and Marketing Manager with creative ideas and digital campaigns.
  • Provide photography support for events, school activities, staff ID photos and marketing projects.

Creative Project Development

A key part of this role is taking an idea, opportunity or piece of work and developing it into a finished digital product.

We are looking for someone who can think creatively about what would work for the Trust and our audiences, rather than simply being given a set of instructions to follow.

You will be expected to:

  • Understand the purpose of a project and who it is intended for.
  • Develop creative ideas for how the work could be presented and brought to life digitally.
  • Consider what content, imagery, photography, video and other assets would make the project engaging and effective.
  • Create a clear plan for developing and delivering the work.
  • Identify what information, resources and input are needed and coordinate these with colleagues.
  • Take ownership of the project from initial idea through to development, testing and publication.
  • Build and develop the website pages, digital content or resources required.
  • Review the finished work and identify opportunities to improve and develop it further.

Hours and Salary

This is a full-time, permanent, all-year-round position, working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.00pm.

The annual salary will start in the region of £30,082, commensurate with experience.

What we Offer

  • Local government pension scheme
  • Health and cycle-to-work schemes
  • Subsidised meals from in-house chefs
  • State-of-the-art IT equipment
  • Discounted childcare
  • Weekly CPD and personalised online training portal
  • Extensive training and development opportunities
  • Good strategies to ensure a work life balance

About You

You will be a creative and confident digital communicator who enjoys developing ideas and turning them into engaging, high-quality content.

You will have excellent writing skills and the ability to tell a story through words and imagery. You will understand how to capture the interest of an audience, communicate information clearly and creatively, and bring a subject to life through thoughtful content, strong visuals and effective presentation.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Experience managing and developing websites, ideally using WordPress and Elementor.
  • Excellent written English, with strong copywriting, editing and proofreading skills.
  • The ability to develop engaging, creative content and tell compelling stories through a combination of writing, photography and visual media.
  • The ability to adapt tone, style and messaging for different audiences and platforms.
  • Strong creative and visual skills, with a good understanding of layout, presentation and how imagery supports written content.
  • Experience creating digital content, including photography and/or video.
  • Experience using image and video editing software such as Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Pro.
  • A strong understanding of website content, user experience and digital audiences.
  • The ability to plan and manage digital projects from initial idea through to completion.
  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • The ability to work independently, use initiative and collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical colleagues.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience using SharePoint and Microsoft 365.
  • Understanding of SEO and website analytics.
  • Experience working in education or the public sector.
  • Experience with social media content creation.
  • Experience with drone photography or video.
  • Experience working with website hosting and DNS.
