At Fairstead Community Primary and Nursery School, we nurture and invest in our relationships. We identify each individual’s potential and work as a team to create a safe environment for everyone to grow and succeed.

A different kind of teaching role

This is not a cover supervisor role.

We are looking for a qualified teacher who wants the opportunity to teach across the school without the responsibility of being attached to one permanent class.

As our Cover Teacher, you will be a teacher in every sense of the word. You will have professional responsibility for the quality of teaching and learning in the classes you teach, including planning, assessment, classroom management and contributing to pupil progress.

Your week will be varied. You may be providing PPA cover in one year group, supporting a class while their teacher attends professional development, and responding to staff absence elsewhere in the school. You will work across different phases and with children with a wide range of needs.

Where you are providing PPA cover, you will work closely with the class teacher to understand the curriculum sequence, pupils' starting points and individual needs. You will then use your professional expertise to deliver effective teaching, assess learning and adapt your teaching accordingly.

We are therefore looking for someone who enjoys the variety of working across a school but who also wants to maintain the professional responsibility and accountability that comes with being a teacher.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and delivering high-quality lessons across the primary phase.
  • Following and developing existing curriculum planning, while adapting teaching to meet the needs of the pupils you are teaching.
  • Assessing pupils' learning and using assessment to inform subsequent teaching.
  • Contributing to the assessment and tracking of pupil progress.
  • Maintaining high expectations for behaviour, effort, relationships and achievement.
  • Ensuring that pupils with SEND and other additional needs receive appropriate adaptations and support.
  • Establishing positive relationships quickly with different groups of children.
  • Working closely with class teachers to ensure continuity in learning.
  • Providing PPA, CPD and planned and unplanned absence cover across the school.
  • Contributing positively to the wider professional life of the school.
  • Taking responsibility for the impact and quality of your own teaching.

Who might this role suit?

This could be an excellent opportunity for an experienced teacher who:

  • enjoys teaching but would welcome greater variety in their working week;
  • enjoys working with different year groups and colleagues;
  • wants to focus on teaching without the full-time responsibility of one permanent class;
  • is confident adapting quickly to different pupils and curriculum contexts;
  • is passionate about inclusion and ensuring that every child can succeed;
  • enjoys professional autonomy and taking responsibility for their own teaching;
  • is reflective and keen to continue developing their practice.

You will need to be sufficiently experienced and adaptable to walk into different classrooms, understand the learning journey and pupils' needs, and quickly establish an environment in which children can learn successfully.

In return, you will have the opportunity to teach across a large and diverse primary school, develop your understanding of the whole primary phase and become an important member of our teaching team.

Why Fairstead?

We are a friendly, ambitious and forward-thinking school. Our curriculum is engaging and challenging, and our pedagogical principles underpin the school culture.

  • We believe we can all improve.
  • We believe in the potential of all children to learn.
  • We engage in deep thought about challenge and quality.
  • We sequence learning into small steps, considering children's starting points.
  • We are open to feedback.
  • We develop worked models that communicate quality and success.
  • We provide feedback throughout the learning journey.
  • We use Kagan Cooperative Learning structures to promote active participation and collaboration.

Our school values are central to our culture: Responsible, Safe, Respectful and Being a Learner.

We can offer you:

  • A friendly, supportive and ambitious staff team.
  • A varied role working across the whole school.
  • A comprehensive induction to support you in becoming part of the Fairstead team.
  • Ongoing CPD and opportunities to develop your teaching practice.
  • Training in Kagan Cooperative Learning structures.
  • A forward-thinking school committed to evidence-informed practice.
  • Opportunities to work alongside experienced teachers across different year groups.
  • Support from our wider inclusion team, including ELSA, HLTA and TA expertise.
  • Access to a wide range of professional development through the Viscount Nelson Education Network (VNET).
  • Norfolk Rewards – staff discount programme.
  • A school that values staff workload, relationships and wellbeing.

Could this be you?

Perhaps you are an experienced teacher looking for a role that gives you variety without the responsibility of managing one permanent class. Perhaps you enjoy working with different age groups and developing your understanding of teaching across the primary phase. Or perhaps you simply want to be part of a school where you can concentrate on what you love most — teaching children and working with colleagues to make a difference.

If that sounds like you, we would love to hear from you.
