About Barbara Priestman Academy
Barbara Priestman Academy is for students aged 11-19 years with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder or complex learning difficulties. The academy’s greatest resource is its dedicated team of professionals who strive to provide the very best in education and well-being.
Our teaching staff, support staff and multi-disciplinary professionals are all trained in understanding autism and meeting the needs of students with complex needs. Through working in close partnership with parents, governors, businesses and the local community we provide an excellent educational experience for young people.
We offer a range of personalised curriculum pathways at 14 -19, including GCSEs, Level 3 courses, Entry Level courses and ASDAN qualifications. We also offer a range of vocational courses. The personal and social curriculum is underpinned by a broad range of accredited qualifications and/or experiences that develop independence skills, work based skills, interests and develop students citizenship.
We are very proud of our academy’s positive ethos, one that values diversity and provides equal opportunity. We have high expectations for each individual, and are committed to developing each student’s strengths and growing areas of need.
Barbara Priestman Academy is part of Ascent multi-Academy Trust which is a partnership between four secondary special schools in Sunderland. This partnership benefits students through shared resources, expertise and curriculum access.
We welcome new students, parents, staff and visitors to the academy. Please get in touch to see for yourselves the opportunities we provide.
