About Canning Street Primary School

Canning Street Primary School is situated in the inner-west of Newcastle and draws pupils mainly from Benwell but also wider areas such as Elswick and Fenham.

The majority of the school’s pupil-population live in Wards rated as being amongst the most deprived in England. Our pupils predominantly live in rented accommodation within very close range of the school. A high proportion of families are transient or temporary residents and this is reflected in the very high instances of mobility of pupils.

Despite these challenging circumstances, our vibrant, modern school is seen as being at the heart of the local community and is a happy and rewarding place to work.

The school serves a very diverse population comprising a wide range of ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds.

This area of the city is well-served by a range of community support groups and services. The school works in close partnership with these groups and has excellent relationships with the Local Authority, voluntary and emergency services.

The school is close to local shops, parks and places of worship. There is an excellent Centre for Sports and a City Learning Centre for ICT within walking distance of the school. There is a local library within a few minutes walk of the school.

The school is close to Newcastle City Centre and its excellent social and cultural amenities. The area’s very good road and transport links are easily accessible.
