About Folville Junior School

The School was opened as a girl’s Secondary School in the 1930’s in an area known as ‘The South Braunstone Estate’. It became a Junior School for boys and girls in the 1960s, serving part of the estate and also serving a large area of mainly owner-occupied houses, which were built in the Edwardian era. Some 14% of the children come to the School from this area.

The main building has been attractively decorated and is extremely well maintained, fostering a warm, homely atmosphere. Classrooms and work areas adjoin a long, central corridor. There is a large Hall with a raised stage. We have a sensory room which is well equipped to support the children with SEN. The school is well resources with library and classroom books.

There are 360 children at the School, who are arranged in mixed ability, horizontally grouped classes, with three or four classes in each Year Group. Teachers within each Year Group work closely together to ensure that there is consistency, continuity and progression in the children’s work. Children’s learning is frequently linked to a cross-curricular theme or topic.

The development of the Curriculum is supported by the Headteacher, the Deputy Headteacher and the Curriculum Co-ordinator. We strongly believe in developing whole school policies based upon the consensus of all colleagues.

Teachers are highly supportive of their colleagues within the Year Group, and also within the School. The Year Group work is co-ordinated by the Head of Year. This provides for a warm, friendly environment, not only for the children, but also for all Staff.

The local community has a wide range of socio-economic classes. Some 22% of the children are from an Asian cultural background, 22% of the children from one parent families, and 36% of the children have a free school meal. There are currently 3% of children with a Statement of Special Educational Need.
