Main purpose of the job:
• Deliver ICT lessons as part of the school’s PPA cover
• Where appropriate, provide additional cover for short term absence of teaching staff colleagues as required
• Inspire the trust and confidence of pupils and staff colleagues
• Actively engage with staff colleagues to develop skills, share best practice and build team commitment across the school
• Work in support of teaching staff colleagues to improve the quality of pupils’ learning and outcomes, including deputising for teaching colleagues to cover short term absence
• Engage positively with the school’s Performance Management process to advance pupil learning and enhance professional practice in line with the school’s aspirations and priorities
• Help promote the wider aspirations of the school
• Take responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people within the school

Duties and responsibilities
Cover
• Within an agreed system of supervision and within a pre-determined lesson framework, teach whole classes covering PPA and other short-term absence of teaching staff colleagues as required.

Planning
• Liaise closely with the Computing lead and/or class teachers to ensure planning follows the frameworks set out in the school’s teaching and learning policies.
• Work with class teachers to contribute to the planning and preparation of learning activities.
• Use individual expertise to plan own role in learning activities.
• Devise clearly structured activities that interest and motivate learners and advance their learning.
• Plan how to support the inclusion of pupils in learning activities, particularly those with SEND or other additional needs.
• Contribute to the selection and preparation of resources suitable for pupils’ interests and abilities.

Pupil Development
• Support and advance learning and development of physical, intellectual, emotional and social skills of children at the primary stage of their educational career by engaging with and working with pupils through a range of classroom-based activities/tasks. Direct the work of TA colleagues, where required, in supporting learning.
• Support learning and development by accompanying and working with pupils outside the classroom on trips, visits and other activities, under the general guidance of the Class Teacher.
• Promote the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and classes/ groups. Recognise and nurture their abilities and aptitudes by the introduction and development of new initiatives, in collaboration with the Class Teacher. Recognise and respond appropriately to situations which challenge equality of opportunity.
• Support and assist the Class Teacher in maintaining good order and discipline in the classroom/school, by actively engaging with pupils to promote and enforce the school’s behaviour policy.
• Recognise and support social and pastoral needs by planning and undertaking interventions with groups and individual pupils, both within the classroom and throughout the school day, seeking advice where necessary from the Class Teacher and/or SLT.
• Supervise pupils on the playground and elsewhere on the school site and premises as required as part of the school’s agreed duty rota.
• Liaise with the Class Teacher, to ensure clear understanding of tasks and responsibilities and how these will be operated in practice to promote the best outcomes for pupils. Monitor learners’ responses to activities and modify approaches accordingly.
• Use initiative to solve both straightforward and more complex problems to assist the progress of pupils. Seek advice from the Class Teacher in the event that problems persist or escalate.
• Guide and support TA colleagues. Demonstrate tasks to new colleagues and take a lead role in the induction process.
• Prepare resources as in collaboration with the class teacher.
• Carry out administrative tasks collection and use of data, marking, assessment and any other tasks relating to teaching and learning.
• Work with pupils to prepare and produce displays of their work, in collaboration with the class teacher.
• Mark pupils’ work, as appropriate, maintaining and analysing records as required. Monitor learners’ progress in order to provide focused support and feedback.
• Support the evaluation of pupils’ progress using a range of assessment techniques.
• Lead and/or participate in meetings relating to pupils, as required.

Professional Development
• Actively engage in the school’s Performance Management process.
• Work with the SLT and the Curriculum Team to identify personal and professional training needs and participate in any courses arranged to address those needs.
• Share good practice and provide staff colleagues with information from courses etc.

Health and Safety
• Follow Health and Safety procedures at all times, particularly with regard to pupil safety and that of staff colleagues.
• Administer minor first aid (as trained), dispense medically prescribed controlled drugs in accordance with the school’s procedures (as trained) and to attend to children who are sick as necessary.
• Be aware of and maintain full understanding of procedures to follow in the event of an emergency.
• Keep up-to-date with and follow Safeguarding / Child Protection procedures.

Safeguarding
• The governors of Heath Primary School are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young persons at all times. The Higher Level Teaching Assistant, under the guidance of the DSL team, will be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of all children on the Heath Primary School site, or with whom he/she comes into contact, in accordance with the schools’ Safeguarding policies. The post holder is required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

General
• Actively contribute to and promote the overall ethos / work aims of the School.
• Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required.
• Maintain consistent high standards of professional conduct, tact and diplomacy at all times in dealings with parents / staff colleagues and all visitors to the School.
• Maintain absolute confidentiality and exercise discretion with regard to staff / pupil information and the School’s business at all times.
• Act as an ambassador for the school within the local community and beyond, ensuring that the ethos of the School is promoted and supported at all times.
• Undertake any other reasonable tasks and responsibilities as requested by the SLT which fall within the scope of the post.
