1. ABOUT OUR SCHOOL:
Mauldeth Road Primary School is a calm and inclusive school with a strong, caring, pastoral structure which underpins an inspiring curriculum.
The school has a capacity of 480 pupils. Until recently, all year groups were full but in the last few years the falling birthrate in the local area, and the surplus of primary school places, has led to lower numbers in Early Years and Year 1. The school’s community is very diverse.
Although set in a leafy suburb, the area suffers from a high level of deprivation with:
● 93% of the children coming from the 50% most deprived households
(IDACI index)
● 66.6% of the children are EAL
● 12.9% of the children have SEND
● 47.2% of the children are disadvantaged
● 46.8% of the children are on FSM
● 51.9% of the children receive PP

Despite these challenges, pupil outcomes are strong.
2. OUR VISION
Our vision for Mauldeth Road Primary School is to be the first choice of primary school for families in our community and beyond. We aim for our children to leave Year 6 with above average progress in Reading, Writing and Maths and be well-rounded individuals who represent values of mutual respect, honesty, fairness and empathy at school, in the home and in the community. We also equip students with the knowledge of how to use all technology safely and in an age-appropriate way and to have benefitted from a full, broad, balanced and enriching curriculum.
We want our school to continue providing enjoyable, stimulating and challenging experiences for all our children in a calm, safe and supportive environment. We want our pupils to achieve their best academically, physically, artistically and emotionally. We want our pupils to leave Mauldeth Road with sound academic abilities and a strong sense of self-confidence and empowerment, to thrive in the world beyond our school.

4. OUR STRATEGIC PRIORITIES
Teaching, Learning and Curriculum:
To improve attainment through clear intentions for each subject and to achieve a strong Ofsted rating. To raise standards in Reading, Writing and Maths such that our children meet the national averages for phonics, and exceed national averages at KS2. To be placed in the top 20% of all primary schools in England. To enable planning, delivery and resources which foster continuity and consistency of teaching, demonstrable progress and targeted improvement advice for each child.
School Finances
To manage the school’s finances to avoid either structural deficit or clawback and maintain appropriate levels of investment in school activities, buildings and grounds.

School Numbers
To increase the number of children to as close to the current maximum of 480 as possible.

Attendance
To provide support to our pupils and their families in order to meet DfE targets and reduce persistent absence to less than 9% and increase attendance to 96.5% or above, improve punctuality and to reduce disparities between different pupil groups.

Communication and IT
To communicate clearly and quickly with parents and other stakeholders, through digital platforms which enable collaboration and effective partnership, enhanced governance and management. To continually update technological resources, training and education to our pupils to ensure safe participation in our increasingly technological society.

Buildings and Maintenance (Grounds and Environment):
To maintain a school environment that is fit for purpose, safe and secure. To ensure all school buildings are maintained to a high standard with minimal disruption to school life and provide outdoor areas that stimulate and enhance learning, including a forest school, play areas, and spaces for high quality outdoor learning in Nursery and Reception.

Staff and Pupils Well-being, including safeguarding:
To maintain a safe, secure and supportive environment in which to foster the wellbeing of all staff and pupils with measures in place to actively promote this.

Governance:
For all governors to demonstrate commitment, effective participation and contribution. To provide induction packs and training for new governors and ongoing training where required. To maintain a mutually supportive relationship between the Headteacher and governors. To review the school strategy and governance annually.

5. OUR SCHOOL SITE

The school, built in 1933 as a sanatorium school, is situated on a spacious, partly wooded site close to Mauldeth Road station. The original school, built around a lawned quadrangle with trees and flower beds, is in good repair with a new Early Years extension behind. The front field has a running track and a permanent cricket pitch. There’s a wooded area which is used for forest school activities. The playgrounds have a range of sports, play and gym fixtures. A dedicated library was opened in 2016 at the same time as additional classrooms for Early Years.

The school has good access to Ladybarn Park which is used by the children for nature activities, litter picking etc.

6. LEARNING AT THE SCHOOL
We seek to develop the potential of every child in all subjects. Staff care for the children and are skilled in planning to meet their individual needs, both personally and academically. We believe that building good relationships is the key to success and the children and staff of Mauldeth Road Primary School are encouraged to work together to ensure that everyone feels cared for, valued and happy - supported by parents and the governing board. Older children are encouraged to take on responsibility around school and be good examples for our younger children.
Our curriculum is based on developing a high standard of English and Maths skills to facilitate success in other subjects. High academic achievement and creative development are valued at all stages, with the classroom focus continuing to be on challenge, engagement, inspiration, fun and memorable learning.
Learning is celebrated in all its forms and children are encouraged to take risks and be independent, resilient and confident, both inside and outside the classroom. We have a committed staff team, who support and encourage learning, including for those children who may need adaptations. We have specialist teachers for music, science and sport.
Behaviour for learning is very good indeed. Classrooms are typically calm and purposeful and children behave responsibly. Simple, positively phrased rules with clear observable outcomes are consistently applied throughout the school and staff positively reinforce their observance.
Our aim is for all children to leave Mauldeth Road Primary school believing in themselves, having the skills to support others and striving to reach their full potential as calm, courteous, kind and co-operative lifelong learners.

7. OUR ACADEMIC RESULTS
From starting points below the national average, children make very good progress at the school. The three-year average for passing phonics is 77% with an upward trend. Children generally exceed national averages on the multiplication check and in both reaching and exceeding national averages at the end of Key Stage 2. Outcomes for disadvantaged children are generally significantly higher than for disadvantaged children nationally.

8. OUR OFSTED RATING
The school was last inspected in March 2023 and was rated as good – a continuation of the rating over the last fifteen years or so except in 2011, when the school was rated as outstanding. The latest Ofsted report is available on the school’s website.
The HMI commented in March 2023, “The aspect of this report which pleases us most is the recognition that this school is a happy and purposeful place, in which children enjoy their education, are challenged and progress well from their various starting points”.

9. PARENT AND STUDENTS’ VIEWS

In last year’s survey of Year 6 children, the average positive score over 17 questions was 88%. Children see the school as a safe and enjoyable place, where they are encouraged to do well and where they feel confident to approach staff with problems.

The school enjoys the trust and appreciation of the overwhelming majority of parents, who regularly express very positive views on their children’s experience at Mauldeth Road.
