1:1 Teaching Assistant (Complex Medical Needs) job summary

Salary: Grade 7, Point 8- 14: £20,267 - £22,319 per annum, subject to experience (salary quoted is for 32.5 hours per week)*

Contract: Fixed term until 31.08.2027, 39 weeks a year (term time plus inset days). This post is fixed-term and linked to funding currently allocated to support pupils with additional needs. The contract will continue while the funding remains in place (up to 5 years).

The salary quoted reflects the annual salary for the position at the time of advertising. Payment will be made in equal monthly instalments and will be adjusted at the start of employment, and again if employment ends partway through the school year, to ensure the correct salary is paid for work completed during the academic year.

We are looking to appoint two enthusiastic and caring 1:1 Teaching Assistants to support individual children with complex medical needs. This a wonderful opportunity for someone passionate about education and making a positive impact on a child’s learning and development.

Role One:

We are seeking to appoint a dedicated, compassionate and highly responsible 1:1 Teaching Assistant to provide individual support for a student with complex medical needs within our secondary school. Working closely with the student, family, SENDCo, healthcare professionals and school staff, you will be responsible for implementing agreed medical care plans and ensuring that the student's medical and educational needs are met. This role requires a calm, confident and proactive individual who is comfortable following medical procedures and responding appropriately to changes in a student's health and wellbeing.

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support to enable the student to access learning and participate fully in school life.
  • Undertake routine observations and monitoring as outlined in the student's medical care plan, including recording and reporting relevant information.
  • Monitor the student closely throughout the school day for any signs of illness, discomfort or changes in presentation.
  • Administer medication and carry out agreed healthcare interventions in accordance with professional guidance, training and school policies.
  • Support the delivery of physiotherapy programmes and other therapeutic interventions as directed by healthcare professionals.
  • Liaise effectively with teaching staff, the SENDCo, parents/carers and external medical professionals.
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to review meetings as required.
  • Promote the student's independence, dignity, wellbeing and inclusion at all times.
  • Ensure safeguarding and health and safety procedures are followed rigorously.

Role Two:

We are seeking a caring and proactive 1:1 Teaching Assistant to support a student with physical needs in a secondary school setting. The successful candidate will work closely with teaching staff and the SENDCo to ensure the student can access learning and participate fully in school life and:

  • Provide 1:1 support to assist with mobility, personal care, and classroom access.
  • Support the student in engaging with lessons and activities across the curriculum.
  • Help implement and review the student’s individual support plan.
  • Promote independence, confidence, and inclusion.
  • Support the delivery of physiotherapy programmes and other therapeutic interventions as directed by healthcare professionals.
  • Liaise effectively with teaching staff, the SENDCo, parents/carers and external medical professionals.
  • Promote the student's independence, dignity, wellbeing and inclusion at all times.
  • Ensure safeguarding and health and safety procedures are followed rigorously.


We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience working with young children, ideally in a secondary school setting.
  • Understands the importance of building trust and consistency.
  • Is patient, nurturing, and adaptable to the changing needs of the child.
  • Has excellent communication skills and works well as part of a team.
  • Has relevant qualifications (e.g. Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant, or equivalent experience - desirable but not essential).

Each role is to support a named child to enable the student to achieve their full learning potential and facilitate their personal, academic, social, and moral development. Further details of the individual needs will be discussed at interview.
