Assistant Headteacher - EYFS and KS1 job summary

Are you positive, dynamic and inspirational? Do you believe in the power of early years and early reading to transform lives? Have you prevented gaps opening and widening through your own excellent early years practice?

At Okehampton Primary School we say that with respect, kindness and resilience, we flourish together.

This is true for our children, our families and our teams.

Our children are the reason we exist, work hard and show up for work with a smile every day. We are passionately committed to providing a safe, nurturing and inspiring start to children's school journeys. We serve children from two years old and have begun to develop an EYFS unit in which our children can access a balance of adult supported and child-led learning opportunities. We have fantastic indoor and outdoor spaces which are being developed to ensure that their starting points can be met and our high ambitions for their progress can be achieved. Using our new, trust-wide, progression tool, we centre all teaching and provision around assessment information. We are determined that our children are supported to achieve better than their national peers at the end of the EYFS - no matter their starting points - because we know they deserve every opportunity to remain open to them.

Our community put their trust in to deliver the care, education and love that their children deserve. We work with community organisations and are keen to foster more links and develop even more family centred work - especially as we focus on early language development and personal, social and emotional development. Innovative approaches to engaging families and building life-long trust in education are going to be welcomed in the successful candidate.

Our school team is highly committed to our children's success and the living of our school values. Our EYFS and KS1 teams deserve the best leadership and value optimism, problem-solving abilities, positivity, collaborative approaches and presence in their leaders. They are determined that their children should be supported to thrive and achieve and will welcome our successful candidate as a leader and mentor.

The Assistant Headteacher will provide strategic and operational leadership for the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One (including early reading through the Read, Write, Ink scheme) at Okehampton Primary School. As an integral member of the senior leadership team and with the support and direction of the Headteacher, the post holder will secure high‑quality provision, teaching and outcomes for all children, laying strong foundations for lifelong learning. The role includes leading staff, curriculum, assessment and transition, while modelling excellent early years practice and promoting the school’s ethos, values and commitment to inclusion and safeguarding. This role holds a teaching responsibility of 0.6 through which exceptional early years practice can be modelled.
