Assistant Headteacher job summary

Assistant Headteacher | October 2026 | Fixed Term Contract (Maternity Leave)

By joining St Paul’s Way Secondary School, you will become part of a school with a rich heritage of success. We are the most oversubscribed school in Tower Hamlets and Ofsted rated us ‘Outstanding’ across all categories but one. We have a talented and determined staff body, driven by a mission in providing a transformational education for all our students.

Guided by our core values of Integrity, Aspiration and Community, we hold a collective and unwavering belief that every child can thrive when barriers are removed through strong structures, skilled support and purposeful adult leadership.

We are looking for someone to join our strong and aspirational senior leadership team, with significant opportunity to grow as a senior leader, offering the scope to develop over time and prepare for Deputy Headship and beyond. Assistant Headteachers work with leaders across the Trust and are encouraged to seek out wider opportunities for growth and development. SLT portfolios are determined year on year according to school improvement priorities and personal growth goals.

Development, working structure and flexible working at St Pauls Way

At SPW we have shaped a working environment that places staff wellbeing at its centre without compromising the quality of teaching and learning. To all staff we pledge:

  • An all-school approach to behaviour management that is led by an experienced and well-resourced pastoral team
  • Whole class feedback models instead of written marking
  • Collaborative curriculum planning time and centralised SOW and resources
  • Instructional coaching for every member of teaching staff
  • Only two data inputs for each year group per academic year
  • Considered and impactful line management for all staff
  • Flexible working including opportunities for part-time work and flexible planning time onsite/offsite
  • A high achieving, dynamic and professional sixth form that provides extensive development opportunities
  • Beyond this, collaboration underpins a staff developmental model in which every teacher benefits from fortnightly coaching, within which time teams also have timetabled subject specific training during the school day.
  • At SPWS we believe in fostering a clear and explicit student culture that is articulated through our character framework and is underpinned by the values of SPWT: Integrity, Aspiration and Community.
  • As a result, we can offer:

  • A calm, ordered and purposeful learning environment
  • Students who feel safe, supported and enthusiastic about school
  • Classrooms free from low-level disruption, enabling high-quality teaching
  • A whole-school commitment to inclusion and collaborative working
  • We are seeking to appoint an ambitious Assistant Headteacher to join our Senior Leadership Team. The portfolio will be dependent on the successful candidate’s strengths and experience.

  • Unrelenting in your pursuit of excellence in all aspects of your practice
  • Successful in working with young people and securing the best outcomes for them
  • An experienced leader
  • Team spirited and prepared to go above and beyond to get the job done.
