What skills and experience we're looking for

Shireland Biomedical UTC is the UK's first University Technical College specialising in healthcare and health science. Situated in the centre of West Bromwich, we are an ambitious and rapidly growing academy with a clear vision: to provide an exceptional education that prepares young people for success in higher education. Alongside this, we also offer a broad and balanced curriculum across KS3-KS5. We are a traditional academy, with the advantage of a UTC.

Having welcomed our first Year 7 cohort in September 2022 and reached full capacity in September 2026, we are entering an exciting new phase of our development. This is a unique opportunity to join a forward-thinking academy at a pivotal stage in its journey, helping to shape its future while benefiting from outstanding professional development and career progression opportunities.

We are looking for a passionate, ambitious and highly effective Assistant Principal to join our senior leadership team and play a significant role in shaping the next stage of our academy’s development.

You will provide strategic leadership for Personal Development, creating an exceptional student experience that extends far beyond the classroom and ensures every young person feels a strong sense of belonging within our academy community. By bringing together careers, enrichment and wider personal development, you will ensure every student has the experiences, opportunities and guidance they need to build confidence, broaden their horizons, discover their strengths and develop ambitious aspirations for their future.

This is an exciting opportunity to shape a distinctive and inclusive Personal Development offer that strengthens belonging, builds character and develops confident, independent young people. You will connect students with opportunities both within and beyond the academy, ensuring they leave us ready to thrive in their next steps and make a positive contribution to the wider world.

Could you shape the experiences, opportunities and sense of belonging that enable young people to thrive, both now and in the future?

We welcome applications from exceptional leaders across a range of subject backgrounds. As part of the role, the successful candidate will also contribute to the delivery of Business Studies KS4.

Applicants should:

  • Have middle or senior leadership experience with demonstrable impact.
  • Experience of improving progress and attainment across key stages, especially KS4-KS5.
  • Have experience of teaching across the key stages, especially at KS4 and KS5.
  • Have experience of delivering, or able to deliver subjects outside their specialism.
  • Be a consistently good/outstanding teacher.
  • Be an exceptional classroom practitioner with high expectations of both learning and behaviour.
  • Demonstrate an ability to inspire, motivate and enthuse pupils.
  • Be committed to raising standards for all and share the same drive to constantly learn and improve.
  • Show willingness to lead initiatives and show evidence of impact.
  • Be able to demonstrate a passion to make a difference to others.
  • Be proficient with the use of technology for learning and have a willingness to innovate.
  • Be proficient with the use of data and information to inform strategic decision making.

  • Friendly and enthusiastic students.

We pride ourselves on being an employer where all staff can thrive. We believe that supporting our staff both personally and professionally allows them to give their very best to our students. Our aim is to foster a working culture that recognises and reflects the importance of good mental health and wellbeing and provides effective support when colleagues need it.
