Attendance Welfare Officer (AWO)

Robert Smyth Academy is seeking to appoint a committed, proactive and highly organised Attendance Welfare Officer to join our dedicated team. This is an exciting new role within the school, created to strengthen our strategic approach to improving student attendance and wellbeing.

About the Role

As Attendance Welfare Officer, you will play a vital role in monitoring, analysing and improving student attendance across the school. You will work closely with pupils, families, staff and external agencies to identify barriers to attendance and implement effective, targeted interventions.

You will be responsible for ensuring attendance processes are robust, timely and compliant, while contributing to safeguarding by identifying when absence may be a cause for concern.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and track daily attendance, ensuring registers are accurate and complete
  • Follow up unexplained absences with parents/carers and escalate concerns appropriately
  • Analyse attendance data, producing reports to identify trends and areas for improvement
  • Support and deliver interventions for students with persistent absence
  • Build strong relationships with pupils, families and staff to promote positive attendance
  • Coordinate meetings, attendance clinics and home visits where necessary
  • Work closely with safeguarding staff to address attendance-related concerns
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to statutory returns and processes

About You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is highly organised, proactive and able to prioritise effectively
  • Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Is confident working with data and producing reports (including Excel)
  • Can build positive relationships with students, parents and colleagues
  • Has experience working in a school or similar setting
  • Understands safeguarding, inclusion and the barriers affecting attendance
  • Is committed to improving outcomes for all young people
