What skills and experience we're looking for

We are pleased to offer an opportunity for a Behaviour and Pastoral Officer to join our team at The Portsmouth Academy.As a key member of our Patrol Team, you will promote positive values, attitudes and good student behaviour across the school, while maintaining a strong and visible presence around the site. Your work will help create a calm, predictable and respectful environment where students can achieve their full potential.

The role focuses on:

  • Supporting students whose behaviour does not meet expectations and ensuring appropriate follow‑up takes place
  • Building positive relationships through relational practice to strengthen community and empathy
  • Providing targeted intervention strategies to remove barriers to learning
  • Supporting students experiencing difficulties at school or at home, ensuring they receive the help they need
  • Acting as a mentor for students who are underachieving in relation to their targets
  • Contributing to a strong culture of safeguarding and student wellbeing

  • Previous experience working with children or young people in an educational, care or support setting
  • Experience of working with challenging behaviour and using de‑escalation techniques
  • Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding procedures and child protection
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, parents and external agencies
  • An empathetic, calm and non‑judgemental approach, with the ability to remain composed during high‑pressure situations
  • Confidence using ICT systems, including Microsoft Office 365
  • A commitment to modelling the school’s values and contributing positively to the wider life of the academy
