What skills and experience we're looking for

The role of Behaviour Support Mentor (BSM) is to support an inclusive and high-quality learning environment for our pupils, using a solution focused, pupil-centred and consistent approach. As a BSM you will be working with all colleagues and key stakeholders to ensure and promote excellent pupil-centred practice. You will resolve difficulties which are causing wellbeing and safety concerns as quickly and effectively as possible, promoting learning, progress, ownership and leadership. The successful candidate will have a flexible approach, knowledge and experience of working with children in KS1-2 who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties. The post requires someone who is highly resilient, able to work well as a member of a successful team and someone who has highly developed interpersonal skills and a good sense of humour.

Skills Summary:-

• To work with the teachers to ensure and promote effective behaviour support. throughout the academy for all pupils to improve learning outcomes. • To provide support daily to pupils to promote good behaviour for learning. • In conjunction with the Behaviour for Learning Team Leader, monitor and implement development on whole School Behaviour Support policy. • To set targets to improve behaviour for learning for individual students. To support the teacher and pupils • To organise and support with pupil rewards and sanctions requested. • To liaise with parents regarding behavioural issues as required in consultation with the Behaviour for Learning Team Leader, Vice Principal and Assistant Vice Principal. • To promote the whole academy ethos as encapsulated in the academy mission statement. Page 2 of 3 Ref: 1.3 Behaviour - Behaviour Support Mentor • To monitor and analyse data to further improve individual pupil’s behaviour patterns. • To respond to requests from teaching staff for assistance/ support with behaviour support issues. • To respond through proactive intervention. • To assist with supervision during break and lunch times. • Ensure accurate records are kept and monitored, of all behavioural issues and trends. • To lead on pupil parliament, meetings, recording and displaying the relevant material.

Nigel Bowes Academy is a special school supporting young people from the age of 5-11 who present with Social, Emotional and Mental Health difficulties, associated with a range of special educational needs, including autism. We are an oversubscribed school, supporting around 50 pupils on roll. We welcome pupils who reside in Dorset and Hampshire, with the majority of our pupils living in the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole conurbation. Our pupils have Educational, Health Care Plans or are in the process of receiving one. We also support a small number of pupils who will be placed by the Local Authority whilst waiting for a placement in a special school or to transition back to mainstream education.
