Are you practical, hands-on and enjoy fixing things? Do you have DIY skills and want to start a career in facilities and site services?
We are seeking a motivated and reliable Building Services Assistant to support the day-to-day maintenance, security and upkeep of our school site. The role operates on a variable shift pattern, with working hours scheduled between 7.00am and 6.00pm.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to gain experience in facilities management, property maintenance or building services. The role would suit someone at the start of their career, looking for a career change, or seeking to develop existing DIY and maintenance skills in a practical, hands-on environment. Applications are welcomed from individuals with experience as a handyman, caretaker, premises assistant, or from those with transferable skills and a willingness to learn.
About the Role
Working under the direction of the Site Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring our school buildings, grounds and facilities remain safe, secure, clean and welcoming for pupils, staff and visitors.
Duties will include:
- Helping maintain the security of the school premises, including keyholding duties, site opening and closing procedures, and alarm operation.
- Maintaining the school grounds and outdoor areas, including litter picking, gritting, snow clearance and other routine grounds maintenance tasks.
- Supporting the set-up and clearing of classrooms, halls and outdoor spaces for school events.
- Undertaking manual handling duties and moving equipment as required.
- Assisting with the management of deliveries and site stock.
- Carrying out basic repairs and maintenance tasks.
- Assisting with painting, decorating and DIY projects.
- Conducting routine site inspections.
- Supporting health and safety checks.
- Assisting contractors when required.
What We're Looking For:
You may already have experience of DIY, maintenance, construction, caretaking or property upkeep. However, we are equally keen to hear from applicants seeking an entry-level opportunity who can demonstrate enthusiasm, reliability and a willingness to learn.
The successful candidate will:
- Be practical and enjoy hands-on work.
- Have basic DIY and repair skills.
- Be keen to learn new skills and develop professionally.
- Be reliable, hardworking and organised.
- Be able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Take pride in maintaining high standards.
- Enjoy working both indoors and outdoors in a busy school environment alongside pupils, staff, visitors and contractors.
- Demonstrate a flexible approach to work and a positive, solution-focused, can-do attitude.
Why Join Us?
- A well-maintained and well-resourced school environment.
- 30 days' annual leave plus 8 bank holidays.
- Membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme.
- Full training and support, with access to a wide range of online CPD courses.
- 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme.
- Opportunity to gain valuable maintenance and facilities management experience.
- Varied and rewarding work, with no two days the same.
- A friendly and supportive team environment.
Whether you are leaving education, looking for a career change or seeking your first step into building maintenance, we welcome applications from enthusiastic individuals with a practical mindset and a willingness to learn.
No formal qualifications in building maintenance are required. We value enthusiasm, reliability and a positive attitude just as much as experience.
