Reporting To: Careers Leader (Debbie Wicks)

Responsible For: Work placements, student coaching, and transition support

Job Purpose

To provide support and guidance to students with special educational needs in finding and maintaining work experience and employment opportunities. The Job Coach works closely with students, teachers, parents, local businesses, and staff to facilitate successful job placements, develop employability skills, and promote independence in the workplace. The role also involves safeguarding responsibilities and contributing to the careers curriculum.

Key Responsibilities

1. Learner-Based Support

  • Plan and deliver lessons within the careers curriculum.
  • Keep accurate records of students & attainment and progress, implementing interventions when necessary.
  • Develop students using coaching and questioning techniques within the careers curriculum.
  • Support skills development through work placements, collaborating with organisations such as Mimis Daughters and The Broads Authority.
  • Ensure that each students EHCP (Education, Health, and Care Plan) outcomes are met.
  • Implement strategies to support learners’ self-esteem and confidence.
  • Guide students in problem-solving workplace issues and professional communication.
  • Help students explore vocational options through profiling.
  • Assist students in understanding their workplace rights and responsibilities.

2. Job Development & Workplace Support

  • Collaborate with local businesses to identify job opportunities.
  • Assist students in resume writing, interview preparation, and job applications.
  • Provide on-site coaching and support during job placements.
  • Teach workplace social skills, communication, time management, and organisation.
  • Support students in transitioning into the workforce, ensuring they understand workplace culture and responsibilities.
  • Work with external provisions to increase exposure and experience for students.
  • Support students in traveling independently or using school transport to work placements.

3. Monitoring & Evaluation

  • Regularly assess student progress in job placements, offering additional support as needed.
  • Identify barriers to success and work with students and employers to find solutions.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress using Earwig and Work Experience logs.
  • Provide feedback on learning barriers to the Careers Leader.
  • Assist in developing vocational training programs to enhance student development.

4. Collaboration & Reporting

  • Work closely with teachers, parents, and external professionals to create individualised career plans.
  • Provide regular progress reports to school leaders, parents, and relevant professionals.
  • Support the Careers Leader with events, including parents' evenings and career fairs.
  • Support transition activities for students moving to further education, supported internships, or employment.
  • Assist in tracking ex-pupil progress and destination data.
  • Ensure activities align with the Gatsby Benchmarks for career development.

5. Safeguarding Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safeguarding lead is immediately informed of any concerns related to students.
  • Maintain a commitment to onsite and offsite safeguarding practices.
  • Educate students on workplace safety and risk management.
  • Support students in managing anxiety and addressing workplace concerns professionally.

6. Administrative & Professional Development

  • Attend relevant CPD (Continuing Professional Development) training and share best practices.
  • Support the Careers Leader in compass updates and records.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of job coaching activities and recommendations.
  • Participate in career events, school residentials, and college visits.
  • Willingness to transport students using school or personal transport when necessary.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • GCSE grade 4/C or above in English and Maths or equivalent Level 2 qualification.
  • Understanding of The Gatsby Benchmarks
  • Experience working with young people, preferably in an SEN setting.
  • Knowledge of ICT systems for educational purposes (e.g., CPOMs, Scholarpack, Earwig, Google Drive).
  • Commitment to student safety, confidentiality, and professional conduct.

Desirable

  • Job Coach Qualification Level 3 or above
  • Food Hygiene Level 2 certificate.
  • Experience in educational, vocational or employment settings.
  • Counselling or mentoring qualifications

  • This role is essential in helping students with special educational needs build independence, employability skills, and successful careers.
