At John Clare, we take care….
As a local, rural school we are a proud to offer a caring, individualised learning environment, in which each and every child feels safe, valued and happy. This atmosphere gives our children the best chance of reaching their full potential and remaining positively engaged in learning. Our school environment enables the staff to really know and nurture our pupils, and to take a genuine interest in their unique backgrounds, skills and interests. We aim to provide every child with experiences and learning opportunities that inspire, excite and challenge them, and that help to prepare them for their bright futures ahead.

We currently have 5 mixed-age classes: Buttercross (Reception & Year 1), Woodgate (Year 1 & 2), Broadwheel (Year 3 & 4), Swaddywell (Year 4 & 5) and Torpel (Year 6). The main building comprises a large hall equipped for gymnastics, drama and music, which is also used as a dining area with meals prepared and cooked by our school caterer. Helpston Under 5s share the site and are housed in their own unit and also provide our school with before and after school provision.

The school was opened on 13th July 1965 in commemoration of the poet John Clare’s birthday (1793 – 1864), after whom the school is named. The children celebrate this every year by taking part in the Midsummer Cushions and John Clare Society festivals.
