Class Teacher job summary

  • East Specialist Inclusive Learning Centre (East SILC) is a large and highly regarded 2-19 generic special school supporting approximately 470 pupils with a wide range of complex needs. The school operates across a number of sites and delivers several city‑wide services, including the Physical Difficulties and Medical Service and the Medical Needs Teaching Service for Leeds.

East SILC is a complex and dynamic organisation, known for its inclusive ethos, strong partnerships and commitment to improving outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

Do you want to join a team that truly makes a difference to children and young people’s lives?

This is a rare opportunity to secure a permanent teaching post at East SILC, arising due to the relocation of a colleague. We are seeking to recruit a Class Teacher, initially based at our Jack Clark site, in line with the needs of the school and the expertise of the successful candidate.

This role would particularly suit teachers with a strong foundation in Early Years or KS1 practice who are keen to apply their expertise within a specialist, inclusive setting.

As with all appointments to East SILC, staff may be asked to work at any site within the organisation.

    The successful candidate will:

    • Be an inspirational, nurturing and enthusiastic classroom practitioner with a strong understanding of early child development
    • Have Early Years or Key Stage 1 experience, including supporting pupils working at early developmental stages
    • Aspire to be an outstanding practitioner within specialist and inclusive education
    • Be passionate about high‑quality, developmentally appropriate teaching and learning for young children and learners with complex needs
    • Be able to creatively adapt the curriculum using play‑based, sensory and experiential approaches to meet a wide range of complex and additional needs
    • Be confident supporting pupils who may present with complex communication needs and behaviours that challenge, using consistent and trauma‑informed approaches
    • Have experience of, or a strong interest in, early communication, interaction, emotional regulation and readiness to learn
    • Work effectively in partnership with parents/carers, therapists and other professionals
    • Be willing to make a positive contribution to the wider life of the school

Experience in a mainstream setting is welcomed, provided candidates demonstrate a strong commitment to inclusive practice and a willingness to develop specialist expertise

    What we offer

East SILC offers an extensive range of opportunities and benefits. All staff benefit from a robust induction programme and a strong commitment to continuous professional development, career progression and equal opportunities.

    • Teachers’ Pension Scheme

    • Protected off‑site PPA time for teachers
    • A strong culture of wellbeing, supported by the Schools Advisory Service, including:
    • Fast‑track GP access
    • Physiotherapy
    • Counselling support

In addition, staff can access a wide range of Leeds City Council benefits, including salary sacrifice schemes such as cycle‑to‑work and electric vehicle leasing, and VIVUP, offering access to discounted goods and services.

The East SILC is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Appointments are made subject to a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS formally CRB) and medical clearance from Leeds City Council’s Occupational Health Service.

It is illegal to apply if you are on the Children’s Barred List.

We are proud to promote equality and diversity and aim to build a workforce that reflects the community of Leeds.
