Cook job summary

About Us

At All Saints Primary School, we may be small, but we have a massive heart. Nestled in the beautiful countryside of Ranton, our school is a close-knit community of just over 70 wonderful pupils and a dedicated, supportive team of staff. We believe that good learning starts with a good meal, and we are looking for a wonderful cook to become the heartbeat of our school kitchen.

The Role

We are seeking a passionate, reliable, and friendly School Cook to take the reins of our kitchen. This isn't just about mass production; it’s about cooking wholesome, nutritious, and delicious meals that fuel our children's days. Because we are a small school, you will truly get to know the children, their preferences, and be a familiar, smiling face they look forward to seeing every lunchtime. We use a 3 week rolling menu, planned by our Catering Supervisor with input from all our school cooks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Meal Preparation: Prepare, and cook fresh, balanced lunches daily for our pupils and staff. (approx 40 covers per day)

  • Kitchen Management: Maintain the highest standards of cleanliness, food hygiene, and safety (HACCP) within the kitchen.

  • Dietary Safety: Manage food allergens and cater to specific dietary requirements with care and accuracy.

  • Stock & Ordering: Manage stock levels, order ingredients from suppliers, and keep within the kitchen budget.

  • A Welcoming Environment: Create a warm, friendly atmosphere at the serving hatch.

What We Are Looking For
  • Experience: Previous experience in commercial catering, batch cooking, or a school environment is highly desirable—but a genuine passion for home-style cooking and feeding people well is essential.

  • Qualifications: A current Food Hygiene Certificate (Level 2 or above) is preferred (though training can be provided for the right candidate).

  • Skills: Great organizational skills (you’ll be running the kitchen solo/with minimal supervision) and the ability to work under a strict lunchtime deadline.

  • Personality: A warm, patient, and approachable nature. You must enjoy working around children!

Please Note: Because this role involves working closely with children, the successful candidate will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS background check.

Why You’ll Love Working With Us
  • The Ultimate Work-Life Balance: No evenings, no weekends, and term-time only contracts mean you get all the school holidays off!

  • Community Spirit: You will be a valued, central figure in a lovely rural community where your hard work is genuinely appreciated by kids and parents alike.

  • Supportive Staff Team: You are never on your own; you will join a tight-knit, welcoming school team that genuinely supports one another, looks out for each other, and values the vital role you play in our school day.

The hours for this role are M-F, 10am - 2pm, term time only.
