English Tutor/Reading Intervention Support Person job summary

This role offers a unique opportunity to transform the lives of students by developing their reading, phonics and English skills through high-quality intervention and tuition programmes. Working with students in Key Stages 3 and 4, you will provide targeted support through one-to-one and small group sessions, helping learners improve their reading fluency, comprehension, confidence and overall attainment in English.

Students are at the centre of everything we do, and this role plays a vital part in ensuring that every learner can access the curriculum, develop a love of reading and achieve their potential. Full training in the academy's chosen intervention programmes will be provided.

Our Head of English would be delighted to welcome you for a tour of the school, introduce you to the department and answer any questions you may have about the role.

As an English Tutor and Reading Intervention Specialist, you will:

  • Deliver high-quality one-to-one and small group English tuition and literacy intervention programmes.
  • Identify students who require additional support in reading, phonics and English, working closely with Heads of Department and pastoral teams.
  • Plan and deliver engaging, innovative and structured sessions that meet the needs of different learning styles.
  • Support students whose reading age is below their chronological age, helping them develop the skills needed to access the wider curriculum.
  • Monitor, assess and report on student progress, demonstrating the impact of interventions.
  • Encourage confidence, resilience and a positive attitude towards learning and reading.
  • Provide students with guidance and support that enables them to flourish academically and personally.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, students and parents where appropriate.
  • Contribute to the continued success of the English department and the academy's literacy strategy.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has a strong academic background in English (A Level, degree or equivalent).
  • Has a genuine passion for literacy, reading and supporting young people.
  • Can build positive relationships with students and motivate them to succeed.
  • Is confident working with students of varying abilities and needs.
  • Can communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Is organised, adaptable and committed to securing the best outcomes for every student.
  • Enjoys working collaboratively as part of a supportive and ambitious team.

This role would be ideal for an experienced Teaching Assistant looking to specialise in literacy, a graduate considering a career in teaching, or someone with experience of tutoring English and supporting reading development. Most importantly, we are seeking someone who shares our belief that strong literacy skills open doors and change lives.
