What the school offers its staff

One of our unique strengths and selling points is our commitment to staff which includes:

  • Reduced teaching allocation to allow for each faculty to meet collaboratively for an hour each fortnight in specialist subject teams to support subject specific pedagogy and development
  • Access to a range of salary sacrifice schemes (e.g. bicycle, electric vehicles)
  • Leadership and Teaching & Learning development opportunities
  • A supportive environment where work/life balance issues are considered carefully
  • Access to school fitness facilities out of school hours
  • Higher priority for admission of children of staff into the school

Further details about the role

Whickham School is seeking to recruit an engaging and inspirational Faculty Leader for MFL & Social Sciences. Our Faculty Leaders are regarded as senior leaders within the school, accountable for the performance of a significant number of staff, as well as contributing to wider school priorities outside of their faculty. As a result this is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious individual who has a real passion for making a difference to the lives of young people.

We place a strong emphasis on pastoral work and the role of a tutor, and use a restorative approach in supporting pupils. The school is heavily oversubscribed and results are considerably above local and national averages (progress 8 in 21/22 was +0.25). The uptake of languages at Whickham School is very strong and around two thirds of pupils continue with a language into KS4. The faculty is a high performing team of 8 staff.

Commitment to safeguarding

Our organisation is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. We expect all staff, volunteers and trustees to share this commitment.

Our recruitment process follows the keeping children safe in education guidance.

Offers of employment may be subject to the following checks (where relevant):

Whickham School is a large and successful school in Gateshead with over 1700 students including approximately 350 in our high performing sixth form.
Demand for student places is strong and the school is regularly oversubscribed. Students are organised into year groups whilst eight faculties deliver the school curriculum. The Sixth Form, which has its own dedicated facility, is an increasingly popular choice of students from all over the local area.

In January 2020 many faculties moved into a brand new, state of the art, STEAMS themed building. The stunning four storey building houses Science, Technology (plus Business and IT), Engineering, Art, Maths and Sport.

The Leadership Team meet weekly and share responsibility for policy generation, decision making, planning and the general wellbeing of the school. The relevant governing body committee is involved in strategic planning and policies from the onset. Faculty and Year groups meet every two weeks to discuss strategic issues
