Full-Time Teacher of English job summary
“The powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse”, Walt Whitman
At AGSB, we believe English provides the skills that are the cornerstone of a good all-round education and a successful, fulfilling life: clarity, communication and creativity. At the heart of our work is a passionate belief in the power of language, the adventure of literature, and the joy of self-expression.
Students are invited to read widely across all genres and respond with enthusiasm and insight. Whether it is Shakespeare or the Sunday Times, Dickens or the Daily Mail, Fitzgerald or Facebook, students are encouraged to be active and inquisitive readers with the ability to follow arguments, make connections and develop personal responses.
Writing is presented not just as a necessary life skill but as an art to be nurtured and honed. Students write poems, drama scripts, short stories, journalism and essays throughout the course and are taught to emulate the craft of great writers, as well as to develop an accurate and distinctive personal style.
More than anything else, students are urged to see their English lessons as a voyage of discovery - a chance to think critically, explore new ideas, appreciate beautiful writing and find an authentic voice of their own.
Joining the English Department at AGSB will provide you with the rare opportunity to work with students who are hard-working and hungry to learn. This post will suit an English teacher who enjoys stretching able students, setting their aspirations high, and planning creative, enriching, learning experiences. If that sounds like your idea of a fulfilling place to work, we look forward to hearing from you.
Applications are welcomed from both experienced teachers and newly qualified teachers.
