 School Information

Welford Primary School is a 2-form entry inner city primary school, situated in the heart of the Handsworth community. Our PAN is 480 children including a 60 FTE nursery provision.

We serve a diverse and vibrant community which encapsulates our school vision of:

Diversity is our strength and together we succeed

We have high expectations of our children both academically and through our behaviour blueprint. Most children start their education with us below national expectations, however our dedicated staff work hard to close the outcome gaps, which in turn facilitates at least expected progression from individual starting points.

Our approach to behaviour management is underpinned by our behaviour blueprint which takes the philosophy of when adults change everything changes to ensure that the Welford Way is demonstrated throughout day-to-day school life as a minimum with clear expectations modelled and evident from all. We are proactive at recognising success through our weekly recognitions of above and beyond and half-termly gold book assemblies.

Our rich diversity is evidenced through 98% of our children coming from a range of ethnicity backgrounds, 356 of our children learning English as an additional language and 259 are pupil premium. In addition to this, 54 are SEND school support and 8 hold an EHCP. Inclusion is an integral part of the school to ensure that every child makes at least expected progress from their starting point and provision in place meets their individual needs.

Our school was most recently inspected by Ofsted in March 2025, successfully maintaining a good judgement under the previous inspection framework. All staff continue to embrace change, implement professional development opportunities to ensure the upwards tradjectory against the new Ofsted toolkit.

The governing body meet termly and provide a wealth of challenge and critical friend support to school staff. They take an active role in school development, with link governors meeting relevant staff to develop a deeper understanding of their designated areas.

Parents and local community actively share their views with staff and the leadership team and through this partnership approach the whole child is valued effectively supported throughout their time at Welford. Our pastoral team provide a wealth of support and signposts to parents and the wider community.
