What skills and experience we're looking for
The Governors of Gwinear Community Primary School are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and inspirational Headteacher to succeed our current Head who will be retiring this summer.
We are looking for a talented teacher and leader: someone who has the vision and drive to build on our ethos; maintain and nurture the strong links between the school and the local community and ensure that the children in our care continue to foster a love of learning and to thrive. You will be supported by a passionate and established staff team and an enthusiastic Governing Body, as well as the wider school community.
What the school offers its staff
In our most recent Ofsted report, inspectors described Gwinear Community Primary School as “a happy and supportive school” and commented that “leaders carefully weave the school’s strong ethos of outdoor learning throughout its work.” We believe this perfectly reflects our ethos, whereby we focus on enabling our children to enjoy a rich and varied curriculum through utilising our wonderful grounds and the local area to offer exciting opportunities and to enrich lessons. Inspiring our Future is our motto: this reflects our strong belief in providing skills for life, alongside providing excellent academic progress and achievement. Gwinear sits at the heart of a strong community in a beautiful rural Cornish setting. The pupils who attend the school are happy and are supported by an outstanding team of teachers and support staff.
Please also see the welcome letter from the chair of governors in the attached Headteacher Recruitment Pack for more information.

About the role (to include specific hours per week): (explain more about the role and opportunity including experience / competencies you are looking for)
Are you a teacher that loves the outdoors? Do you want to provide learning experiences that are never forgotten? We are looking for a full time inspirational teacher with a passion for developing the whole child through immersive and meaningful learning. We have a wonderful school set in the heart of the Cornish countryside with fantastic grounds. As much as possible we like to use this valuable asset to enhance children’s learning and we have recently developed our grounds with learning zones that act as extensions to the classroom. In addition we have two minibusses which are used regularly to transport children to three special outdoor locations in the local region and teachers are encouraged to make the most of the wealth of sites in Cornwall that can be visited to enrich the curriculum. We are also keen to combine this ourtdoor influenced approach with innovative use of ICT to really fire up enthusiasm and drive motivation in learners and we are currently upgrading all ICT equipment so we are best resourced to do this. Therefore experience using tablets, laptops and learning software would be most welcome.
The curriculum itself has been carefully mapped out and is covered through topics with themed classrooms and end outcomes where children share their learning with wider audiences e.g. by creating a book, website or a pop up museum!
We also believe the skills of enquiry and reasoning are vital for lifelong learning and we place huge emphasis on nurturing and helping children to develop a strong moral compass. This is not to say the school does not value the importance of the core curriculum. Indeed we strive for the highest standards for all our children but believe this is best achieved by creating the necessary foundations; developing the whole child, buiding resillience and the ability to reflect before providing learning experiences that are exciting and awe inspiring.
With this in mind we want an individual that can bring enthusiasm, creativity and compassion to our team and welcome all applicants that share our vision. However, as the post is for a Year 5/6 class it is vital that any candidate is able to teach to the levels expected for the subjects in the core curriculum.
A visit to the school’s website will help to give you a better idea of the school but there is no substitute for first-hand experience so visits are strongly recommended or for those further afield unable to get in a virtual tour with the headteacher could be arranged. Please email the Administrator for an appointment secretary@gwinear.cornwall.sch.uk.
The position is for a full time teacher, required from September but the school is able to cover provision for the class until notice periods are served. It is initially for a 1 year fixed term basis but will become a permanent contract if this first year is successful. Middle leadership experience particularly with mathematics and/or ICT would be advantageous but all candidates including NQTs will be considered
We are committed to safeguarding children and the successful applicant will be required to undertake an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, and will be assessed against the Childcare Disqualification Regulations.
