To support us on this mission, we are seeking to appoint a highly motivated, talented, and inspiring HLTA with a role to identify, assess and support any students who are EAL (English as an additional language) to join us at Alsop High School.

As a HLTA with responsibility to lead on our EAL provision, you will have a passion for inspiring, supporting and challenging students to achieve excellence. Working as part of our SEND, Inclusion and Literacy team, you will have high standards and expectations and bring a positive ‘can do’ attitude to support a positive culture across the school; supporting and challenging our students in equal measure so they are able to reach their full potential. You will have experience in supporting students whose home language is not English and be skilled in assessing and supporting these students.

PURPOSE

The HLTA EAL Lead will identify any students who have EAL needs students in achieving ambitious educational outcomes by developing their English language skills and to provide support for their families. The person we appoint will teach language skills and support student in inclusive classrooms and coordinate their access to any support devices if they have minimal language. They will liaise closely with the admissions team to assess any new starters who require testing and support teachers in classrooms with strategies to support learners.

Key Responsibilities:

• To create and deliver sessions to new EAL students as part of the EAL Induction programme, including screening of proficiency and assessment and reporting upon entry to the school.

• To deliver learning activities to pupils, either in one-to-one, small group or whole class activities – within an agreed system of supervision.

• To contribute to the teaching and learning of EAL students across the school.

• To help plan and prepare appropriate teaching resources to meet the needs of the full ability range, including where necessary liaison with other staff such as the SENDCO, pastoral teams and class teachers.

• To encourage students to work independently when appropriate to develop greater self-confidence and independence.

• To take an active part in extended curriculum events or activities.

• To deliver learning activities in preparation for and the administration of GCSE language courses.

• To help develop and promote strategies across the school to raise achievement of EAL students.

• To lead on the identification of intervention groups.

• To work either as part of class or lead groups of students for intervention purposes.

• To monitor the progress of those students for whom the postholder is responsible.

• To liaise with relevant staff regarding under-achieving students and contact parents as appropriate.

• To be responsible for intervention assessment, recording & reporting of EAL students.

• To support with the admission of new EAL students e.g. attending admissions meetings.

• To support communication & relationships with parents

• To act as a coach/mentor to a group of students

• To demonstrate an awareness and commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, health and safety and safeguarding.

• To act as a translator for parents (or secure the services of a translator) for meetings such as Parents Evening.

• To line manage and appraise the wider EAL team, i.e. EAL Assistant.

• To coordinate an EAL base area and run clubs at breaks/lunchtimes or after school as required.

As a Higher-Level Teaching Assistant, you will have a passion for inspiring, supporting and challenging students to achieve excellence. Working as part of our team, you will have high standards and expectations and bring a positive ‘can do’ attitude to support a positive culture.

Core Purpose

The Higher-Level Teaching Assistant will work as part of our SEND Team to support and challenge students, and provide high quality intervention programmes to support them. In particular this role will entail supporting student back into mainstream lessons after periods of absence. The role will require someone to have knowledge of, or willingness to learn about EBSA (emotional based school avoidance) The Restart room will have small cohorts of vulnerable students who have barriers to excellent school attendance. The HLTA will manage this provision, working closely with SENDCO and the Attendance manager. You will facilitate online learning for students in both KS3 and KS4 and managed reduced timetables with the ultimate aim of preparing students for full inclusion at Alsop High school. You will have the confidence to ensure online learning packages are accessed and students have a bridge back into school and you will liaise with families and track impacts of your work.

The successful candidate will be dedicated to changing the outcomes of some of our most vulnerable students. They will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. It is crucial that the candidate is resilient and determined as they will be dealing with students with a range of complex needs.
