Medical Officer (Secondary) job summary
Job purpose:
To act as the academy’s lead first aider, assisting with student medical needs, intimate care and first aid. To ensure accurate medical records are maintained, stored securely and reported on in a prompt manner when requested. To act in accordance with health and safety and academy protocol.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Act as the first point of contact for all students' medical needs and ensure full compliance with the school's relevant policies and procedures.
2. Keep all pupil health records up to date on all relevant databases/systems, maintaining accident/incident reports and ensuring that all staff are aware of relevant medical conditions for students in their classes.
3. Carry out first aid procedures on sick and injured students, staff and visitors, keeping senior staff informed as appropriate and summoning for an ambulance where necessary.
4. Ensure medication is stored securely and maintained correctly.
5. Administer medication following the school policies and supervise students in the self-administration of medicines where appropriate and necessary.
6. Support with ordering and maintaining medical supplies for the whole academy, ensuring these are stored correctly and recorded.
7. Ensure the first aid boxes are adequately stocked and distributed throughout the school and reorder supplies when necessary.
8. To lead and assist with daily intimate care routines of pupils that have medical conditions, liaising with external agencies when needed.
9. Manage the use and upkeep of the hygiene suite and medical room.
10. To monitor all medical and health equipment and provisions to ensure that equipment is safe and fit for purpose.
11. To carry out effective moving and handling, to ensure that students are correctly physically supported, in line with guidance provided by external agencies.
12. Liaise with the SLT, SENDCo, medical professionals, relevant staff, and parents/carers to develop and implement health care plans (HCPs) and intimate care plans, which are kept up to date, for all students with specific medical needs, ensuring accurate databases are kept and stored correctly.
13. Lead on the completion of health/medical risk assessments, with support of other relevant staff members, ensure medical details are up to date and are distributed to the relevant individuals.
14. Work alongside the EVC co-ordinator to ensure that pupils with medical needs are risk assessed and considered for all academy trips.
15. Support with setting up and managing PEEPs (Personal Evacuation and Emergency Plan).
16. Support with the coordination of student immunisations and health checks alongside the NHS, providing venues and organising the timetable and collection of forms.
17. Support with the organisation and coordination of first aid and other relevant medical training for staff, in collaboration with the DSL/SENDCo and update associated records.
18. Undergo training for specific medical conditions on how to use and administer specialist equipment such as Epi-pens.
19. Support and work alongside the DSL, SEND and safeguarding team and attendance officers to make every effort to ensure that child is able to attend school with the correct classroom provisions and support the return to school of pupils with medical conditions.
20. Discussing with prospective parents the medical requirements of their children and how the school can best meet these needs.
21. Collating all Year 6 students’ medical requirements, liaising with primary school, parents and medical professionals to write medical health care plans.
Other Responsibilities
22. Consistently role model professional behaviour and establish strong and effective relationships with staff and students.
23. Attend open evenings, induction days and events for students and parents as required.
24. Support the delivery of enrichment activities and trips including accompanying and supervising of students as needed.
25. Participate in appraisal, training and professional development opportunities as required.
26. Undertake other duties consistent with the scope of the post and within the competence of the post holder as required.
Records Management
All staff are responsible for ensuring that confidential records are maintained and securely stored in line with GDPR protocols. It is therefore likely that this post-holder will have responsibility for record-keeping as part of the role. Employees are required to be conversant with GDPR requirements and the Trust’s policies and procedures on records management.
As job descriptions cannot be exhaustive, the post-holder may be required to undertake other duties which are broadly in line with above key responsibilities. Job descriptions are reviewed periodically and update from time to time in line with requirements.
