Operations Manager (including health & Safety lead) job summary

Ivel Valley School and College is a large special school with two sites in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. We are committed to providing a safe, happy, caring and inclusive environment to all our pupils that prepares them well for adulthood and ensuring that every member of our community feels valued and supported. The school has grown significantly over the last five years and is expected to grow considerably larger in the next five years. We currently have 260 pupils and nearly 250 staff.

The Operations Manager role is a new role that has been developed to support with the day to day running of the school thereby freeing up the Business Manager to focus on finance, business administration and strategy. The role-holder will lead on health & safety and co-ordinate and oversee some of the school’s day to day operational functions across both the school and college sites with the aim of improving overall safety, efficiency and effectiveness. They will directly manage or support teams and colleagues that are involved with health & safety, catering, estates and facilities management.

Hours: 35 hours a week (usually 8:30 - 4pm) Monday to Friday but may need to be flexible on start or finish times due to school activities and cover arrangements. Holiday hours would be different

Weeks worked: All year round but we would consider reduced hours during school holidays for the right candidate

Every day could be different – one day you may be helping the kitchen team to still provide lunch despite a serious leak and the next day helping to safely manage a school event with 200 parents arriving on site. However, every day you will be working alongside various highly committed teams and individuals to overcome the challenges and keep everyone safe to enable the pupils to have the best education.

Being a new role it is likely to evolve over time to meet the developing needs of the school and changes to personnel, buildings and teams. Therefore, the role-holder need to be flexible and able to deal with any change that are in the best interests of the school community.

  • Is very experienced at managing health & safety in a busy organisation and is dedicated to improving health & safety across the school
  • Is able to apply their health & safety knowledge and experience in a way that is appropriate to the setting so that it is workable, realistic and sustainable
  • Enjoys the challenge of working across different areas and teams with competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Can deal calmly and effectively with whatever the day brings
  • Has a proactive, flexible and supportive approach to everyone, whether that is pupils, staff, contractors or visitors
  • Is committed to the delivery of effective, high value for money services and solutions across the school
  • Wants to work in a large but close and supportive community
