Pastoral and Therapeutic Lead (Arboretum) job summary

Job overview:

The Arboretum Pastoral and Therapeutic Lead is a senior, specialist role supporting our most vulnerable pupils within The Arboretum, Sidney Stringer Academy’s in-school adaptive provision for pupils with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. The post-holder is responsible for the pastoral care of pupils in the provision and leads on its therapeutic interventions, providing high-quality, relational and trauma-informed support. They lead therapeutic continuing professional development (CPD) for colleagues, lead the relational and restorative culture of the provision in line with its Five Pillars (Welcome, Known, Contributing, Supported and Connected), and lead the branding and clear articulation of the provision’s space. Working as part of a dedicated team and accountable to the Head of Centre, the post-holder helps create a nurturing, structured environment that enables pupils to regulate, re-engage with learning, develop essential life skills, and successfully reintegrate into mainstream classrooms where appropriate.

Working hours:

37 hours per week - term time only plus 5 days

Job requirements:

  • A Master’s-level (Level 7) qualification — or equivalent knowledge and expertise gained through substantial relevant experience — in a field such as education, psychology, counselling or therapeutic practice, social work, or pastoral care.
  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and mathematics (grade C/4 or above).
  • Training (or willingness to undertake training) in trauma-informed practice, de-escalation and safeguarding.
  • Substantial experience supporting children and young people with complex SEMH needs, trauma/ACEs, challenging behaviour, or those at risk of exclusion.
  • Willingness to undertake training in trauma-informed practice, behaviour management, and safeguarding
  • Experience designing and delivering 1:1 and small-group therapeutic interventions.
  • Experience building positive, trusting relationships with vulnerable young people.
  • Experience contributing to multi-agency safeguarding processes (Early Help, CIN, conferences).
  • Ability to remain calm, consistent and positive in challenging situations.
  • Strong record-keeping, organisation and ICT/data skills (GDPR-aware)
  • Excellent communication with pupils, families, colleagues and external professionals.
