Make a real difference to the attendance, wellbeing and success of our students! The Saint John Henry Newman School is seeking to appoint a Pastoral Attendance & Safeguarding Support Coordinator to join our pastoral team. This is an important and rewarding role for someone who is passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to education and achieve their potential. You will work closely with students, families and colleagues to improve attendance, support students experiencing emotionally based school non-attendance (EBSNA) and provide delegated pastoral and safeguarding support.

You will manage an allocated caseload, developing positive relationships with students and their families and coordinating practical, timely support. You will work closely with our Attendance, Safeguarding, SEND, Wellbeing and Pastoral teams to ensure that support is joined up and focused on positive outcomes for each student.

About the role

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing an allocated caseload of students requiring targeted attendance, EBSNA or pastoral support.
  • Working directly with students and parents/carers to understand barriers to attendance and agree achievable next steps.
  • Monitoring attendance, punctuality and engagement and following up concerns in line with school procedures.
  • Supporting phased returns, reintegration plans and other agreed attendance interventions.
  • Coordinating support between pastoral, safeguarding, SEND, wellbeing and curriculum teams.
  • Maintaining accurate records of interventions, communication, attendance and outcomes.
  • Providing delegated safeguarding support under the direction of the Designated Safeguarding Lead, including welfare follow-up and appropriate student check-ins.
  • Recording and escalating safeguarding concerns appropriately using CPOMS.
  • Supporting the practical arrangements for visits and meetings involving external professionals and agencies.
  • Acting as a key point of contact for parents and carers within allocated cases, providing clear, sensitive and appropriately challenging communication.
  • Supporting factual information gathering and student follow-up following significant incidents, as directed by an authorised senior leader.
  • Contributing to multi-agency work and referrals where appropriate.
  • Reviewing cases regularly and identifying when support should be continued, adjusted, escalated or brought to a planned close.

This is a varied role requiring excellent organisation, sound judgement and the ability to build trusting relationships while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.

We are looking for someone who:
  • Has experience of working with secondary-aged children or young people.
  • Has a genuine passion for helping young people overcome barriers to learning and attendance.
  • Understands the importance of attendance and the impact that persistent absence and EBSNA can have on a young person's education and wellbeing.
  • Has an understanding of safeguarding and child protection and the importance of accurate recording and reporting.
  • Communicates confidently and sensitively with students, parents, carers and professionals.
  • Is calm, resilient and able to manage sensitive or challenging situations professionally.
  • Is highly organised and able to manage a caseload, competing priorities and accurate record keeping.
  • Can work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary pastoral team while also working independently within agreed procedures.
  • Is committed to equality, inclusion and the welfare and safeguarding of all students.
  • Will fully support the school's Catholic ethos and our values of Ambition, Courage and Compassion.

The Saint John Henry Newman Catholic School serves the North Hertfordshire Catholic community, with a wider catchment extending into Bedfordshire, East Hertfordshire and parts of Cambridgeshire. Originally a six-form entry school, it expanded to eight forms of entry in 2015 and has grown from 830 pupils in 1993 to approximately 1,600 students in 2023, including a thriving Sixth Form of around 400 students, with strong retention and external applications.

The School became part of the Diocese of Westminster Academy Trust in 2012 and has since benefitted from substantial investment in its facilities. This includes the £3.5 million Sports and Performing Arts Pavilion and a major refurbishment programme, with two new teaching blocks now fully operational, providing modern classrooms, a dedicated Sixth Form suite, enhanced IT provision, and improved Library, Dining and Hall facilities. The final phase will include landscaping and the creation of a prayer garden.

Our Mission Statement underpins all aspects of school life, emphasising the practical expression of our Catholic ethos. We are a welcoming, inclusive community where each student is valued as an individual and encouraged to achieve their full potential. While the Chapel is central to school life, our values are lived daily through strong relationships, high expectations and a culture of care, kindness and responsibility.

The School is heavily oversubscribed and has an excellent academic reputation. Students follow a broad and balanced curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4, with a wide range of GCSE, vocational and creative options. The Sixth Form offers an extensive range of A-level and advanced vocational courses. Outcomes are consistently strong, with high pass rates across GCSE, A-level and vocational qualifications.

We place great importance on enrichment, wellbeing and personal development, supported by a comprehensive careers programme. The School has been awarded the Emotional Health and Wellbeing Kitemark and attendance is above the national average. A Section 48 inspection judged the School to be “Outstanding”, and a recent Ofsted Section 8 inspection confirmed that the School remains “Good”, with inspectors indicating it may now be “Outstanding”.

Inspectors praised our students’ exemplary behaviour, confidence and pride in their school, as well as the calm, purposeful learning environment and the culture of kindness and acceptance fostered by staff. As one Sixth Form student commented, “Whoever you are, wherever you come from and whatever you believe, you are given a warm welcome here.”

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All appointments are subject to an enhanced DBS check.
