Cheney School is thriving. There is a culture of collaboration, support and care throughout the school, leading to higher standards and greater job satisfaction every year. Our school motto is “think for yourself; act for others”; these are not just empty words, and are an essential part of the way Cheney runs.

We believe that strong pastoral care is fundamental to academic success and the holistic development of young people. As a Pastoral Leader, you will be a pivotal figure in ensuring the personal, social, and emotional development of your assigned year group. You will work collaboratively with students, staff, parents, and external agencies to remove barriers to learning and promote a culture of respect, responsibility, and resilience.

We are looking for a candidate who:

  • Has a proven track record of successfully working with young people in an educational setting, ideally in a pastoral role.

  • Possesses excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with students, staff, and parents.

  • Demonstrates a deep understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.

  • Is proactive, resilient, and able to manage challenging situations with empathy and firmness.

  • Has strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise a varied workload.

  • Is committed to promoting a positive school ethos and high expectations for all students.

  • Has a good level of education, with relevant qualifications desirable (e.g., in social care, youth work, or education).

The salary for this post will be at Grade 9 (23 to 26) with an actual salary of £30,792– £33,338 based on working 37 hours per week during term-time, plus 5 INSET days and an additional 10 days throughout the year (in agreement with your line manager).

If you would like to have a confidential conversation about the role with Charlotte Broom (Deputy Headteacher for Behaviour and Attendance), prior to application, then please email cbr@cheneyschool.org or telephone 01865 765726.
