Peripatetic Music Teacher job summary
Future Academies, a Multi-Academy Trust, includes three primary schools and six secondary schools in and around London and Hertfordshire. We are motivated by a mission of social change and reducing educational inequality. Our school and Trust are unique in our approach to a knowledge-rich curriculum; our school motto is Libertas per cultum (Freedom through education), and in our strong emphasis on raising young people’s aspirations and outcomes through the teaching of classical and traditional subjects. Our children and young people study a bespoke curriculum developed by researchers at our Curriculum Centre, which places a focus on developing their cultural literacy and their awareness of the forces, words and events that have shaped our society today.
Future Academies have recently reviewed their music provision in the primary schools with the help of London Music Masters (LMM) to put music at the heart of the school. The review recommended we run two streams of music lessons through the curriculum: a musicianship programme and an instrumental programme. The musicianship programme will run from Reception to Year 6 and will give students an understanding of the key concepts of music through active engagement in music. Students will learn the concepts of pulse, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, tempo and timbre through practical and musical pedagogies.
Alongside the musicianship curriculum, there will be an instrumental programme for KS2 students where students will first have the opportunity to play a range of classroom instruments before moving on to select an orchestral instrument to play from year 4 onwards.
