School Chaplain and EAL Co-ordinator job summary

Champion and rejoice in those we serve

Nurture faith and belonging. Help pupils develop the English they need to learn, participate and thrive

We are looking for a compassionate, organised and skilled School Chaplain and EAL Co-ordinator to support the spiritual, pastoral and educational life of our academy.

This permanent role brings together two important areas of our work. As School Chaplain, the postholder will help develop our distinctive Christian character, lead and support worship and reflection, and provide an approachable source of spiritual and pastoral care. As EAL Co-ordinator, the postholder will teach and support pupils who use English as an additional language, assess their language development, maintain accurate records and use data to identify need, plan intervention and evaluate impact.

The successful candidate will work closely with senior leaders, teaching and pastoral staff, families, local clergy, the Diocese and community partners. They will be a visible and trusted presence who can combine warmth and sensitivity with accurate assessment, purposeful teaching and strong administration.

About our academy

West Grantham Church of England Secondary Academy is a welcoming and inclusive 11 to 16 academy. Our vision is “To champion and rejoice in those we serve, creating an environment where excellence is achieved and potential fulfilled.” Our Christian values are Integrity, Love, Ambition, Courage and Belief.

We believe that every pupil should feel known, valued and able to flourish. This role will help pupils and staff explore faith, values and significant questions about life, while ensuring that pupils who are developing proficiency in English can access the curriculum, participate confidently and achieve their potential.

The role

  • lead and support engaging collective worship, prayer and reflection, and help embed the academy’s Christian vision and values

  • offer appropriate spiritual and pastoral support to pupils and staff, working within safeguarding procedures and professional boundaries

  • provide high-quality, structured individual and small-group EAL interventions

  • assess newly arrived and existing EAL pupils, establish language proficiency and identify strengths, barriers and next steps

  • maintain the EAL register, pupil profiles, assessment records, intervention plans and progress information accurately

  • analyse attainment, progress, attendance and other relevant data for EAL pupils, identify underachievement and report findings to leaders

  • advise and support teachers with practical strategies, resources and adaptations that enable EAL pupils to access an ambitious curriculum

  • support admissions, induction and transition for EAL pupils, and build positive relationships with parents and carers

  • develop pupil leadership, charitable activity, social action and links with churches, the Diocese and community organisations

Who we are looking for

  • a strong personal commitment to supporting the Christian vision and character of a Church of England academy

  • experience of teaching or supporting secondary-aged pupils who use English as an additional language

  • confidence in assessing language proficiency, analysing pupil data and maintaining accurate records

  • excellent communication, listening, organisation and relationship-building skills

  • an inclusive outlook and the ability to engage respectfully with people of all faiths and none

  • a secure understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality and professional boundaries

Relevant qualifications or substantial experience in chaplaincy, Christian ministry, theology, EAL, TESOL, youth work, education or pastoral care would be welcomed. The ability to plan and deliver effective individual and small-group EAL interventions is essential.

What we can offer

  • A welcoming, inclusive academy with a distinctive Christian vision

  • A supportive, visible and approachable leadership team

  • The opportunity to shape both chaplaincy and EAL provision

  • High-quality professional development and strong pastoral and safeguarding structures

  • An electric car scheme, staff assistance programme and free breakfast for staff
