Science Technician job summary
Hours: 18, Monday - Friday Hours flexible but mornings preferred, Term Time Only + INSET Days
The main purpose of this role is to provide a comprehensive practical service to the teachers within an environment adhering to Health and Safety requirements.
Your key responsibilities as Science Technician are:
Health & Safety
Keep up-to-date with Health and Safety requirements
Implement relevant Health and Safety procedures
Inform subject leader regarding Health and Safety issues
Provide technical advice and support on any significant safety needs
Liaise with CLEAPSS and seek advice as necessary
Store and dispose of material including chemical, microbiological, and animal waste and radioactive sources, in accordance with Health and Safety requirements
To act to reduce laboratory risks in accordance with COSHH regulations e.g. correct labelling of bottles, giving teaching staff the appropriate hazard cards for practical work
Activities
Ensure that all practical requirements are met punctually and efficiently
To assist with practical lessons setting out and collection of apparatus and other equipment. To assist with the demonstration of apparatus and equipment as requested by the teaching staff.
Collect all practical resources and return to stores after use
Maintain all the equipment and chemical stock in a clean, safe and serviceable condition, effecting repairs if possible
To care for animals and plants kept for observation and experimental purposes in term time
Carry out administrative tasks under the direction of the subject leader to prepare, maintain and store apparatus required for demonstration or class practical work
To organise and store other classroom materials such as worksheets, internal examination/ test papers and textbooks as required by teaching staff. In addition, to arrange for photocopying to be done as required.
To maintain stock, receive and store new materials requiring special care e.g. toxic/corrosive chemicals, live biological samples. Both handling and storage are to be in accordance with CLEAPS requirements.
To set up and maintain visual aids, overhead projectors, tape recorders video and television, data logging equipment and ICT responsibility
To participate in courses and other in service training on and off school premises as may be required by the Head of Science
Any other particular duties as agreed between technicians and the Head of Science
Care for, maintain and dispose of materials for micro-organisms culture
Making up solutions and other chemical recipes to appropriate degree of accuracy.
Undertaking routine maintenance and simple electric equipment
To purchase perishable goods and other small items for class practical work from local shops
Attendance at appropriate staff meetings and parents evenings which may be outside of the core hours of the job
To adhere to school policy on equality and diversity
To undertake a weekly morning break and/or lunch duty, supervising students in and around the school premises
To contribute to the overall ethos/aims of the school
To appreciate and support the roles of other professionals
To participate in training opportunities and professional development as required
To be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people within the school

Katherine Warington School is a new comprehensive, co‐educational and non‐denominational academic secondary school (opened September 19) with 750 students currently (180 in each of years 7, 8, 9 and 10 – these year groups are already oversubscribed). The school will add a
further 180 students in each subsequent year and then open a 250 strong Sixth Form. By 2025 we will have grown to our capacity of 1,150 students. The school was established through the partnership of the Harpenden Secondary Schools Trust, which includes the three outstanding
schools in Harpenden: Roundwood Park, St George’s and Sir John Lawes and additional partners: the University of Hertfordshire and Rothamsted Research Centre (a world leading non‐profit agricultural science research centre).
