Are you a practical problem-solver with a strong sense of responsibility and a passion for keeping things running smoothly? Wayland Academy is looking for a Site Manager to take responsibility for the day-to-day management and maintenance of our school site, ensuring our buildings, grounds and facilities are safe, secure, well maintained and ready to support the success of our students and staff.
While this is advertised as a full-time position, we are equally happy to consider applications from candidates looking for part-time hours. We want to find the right person for the role and are open to discussing flexible working arrangements. If you are interested in the role but can only work part time, please indicate in your application how many hours you would ideally like to work each week. If you are shortlisted for interview, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss your preferred working pattern with the panel and explore what might work best for both you and the organisation.
What You’ll Be Doing
As Site Manager, you will play a key role in the effective day-to-day operation of the Academy. You will oversee the maintenance, security and general condition of the site, ensuring that the Academy remains a safe, welcoming and well-maintained environment for students, staff and visitors.
You will be responsible for the day-to-day management and maintenance of the Academy’s buildings and grounds. You’ll oversee site security, carry out routine maintenance, manage contractors, and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations. This is a hands-on and varied role where no two days are the same!
You’ll also play a key role in keeping our facilities in top shape; from making sure heating and lighting systems are functioning, to ensuring our site is compliant with all relevant legislation. You'll lead a small team, manage budgets, support improvement projects, and even keep our Academy minibus clean and road-ready.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Ensuring security of the Academy and contents, including fire and burglar alarms and CCTV.
- Undertaking key holder responsibilities, including opening and securing the site.
- Planning and organising routine maintenance and site improvement programmes.
- Managing maintenance requests and work schedules through the SmartLog portal.
- Ensuring Academy compliance with legislation, statutory guidance and Trust risk assessments.
- Monitoring heating, lighting, plumbing, power and other utility systems to ensure operation.
- Managing premises-related health and safety matters and maintaining a safe working environment.
- Overseeing improvement projects and liaising with contractors and external suppliers.
- Obtaining quotes, monitoring contracts and supporting effective budget management.
- Leading and supporting the site team.
- Taking responsibility for the Academy minibus, ensuring it remains clean, tidy and roadworthy.
This is a varied, practical role where you will need to be proactive, organised and able to respond effectively to the changing needs of a busy secondary school.
About You:
We are looking for someone with practical experience of site maintenance and security who can take ownership of the Academy's premises and ensure that everything is maintained to a high standard.
You will have a good understanding of health and safety requirements and statutory regulations, together with the ability to organise work, manage contractors and lead a team effectively.
You will be a confident communicator who can build positive working relationships with colleagues, contractors, students, parents and other visitors to the Academy. You will also be able to manage competing priorities, solve problems effectively and remain calm and practical when dealing with unexpected issues.
Essential:
- Experience of premises maintenance and security, ideally within a school or similar environment.
- Good knowledge of health and safety requirements, statutory regulations and fire safety.
- Experience of managing people, budgets and programmes of work.
- Experience of using online maintenance, work-order or similar systems.
- Ability to plan, organise and deliver maintenance programmes effectively.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to work effectively with staff, contractors and external representatives.
Desirable:
- Experience of working within a school environment.
- Awareness of environmental and sustainability strategies.
- A full driving licence.
