Specialist Learning Assistant – Kaleidoscope (ARMS) Provision job summary
West Lodge Primary School is a large, diverse and inclusive primary school in Pinner, Harrow. We are looking for exceptional people who want to make a difference to work in our Kaleidoscope provision for children with autism.
This is a challenging but very rewarding role. You will need to have some experience of working with children with autism and have a positive, fun, “can do” attitude.
We are looking for learning support assistants who have proven experience of working with children with additional needs to work in our Kaleidoscope (ARMS) provision. Pupils follow pre-formal, semi-formal and formal curriculum pathways and may have significant and complex needs, including autism, learning difficulties, medical needs, and behaviours that challenge.
You will work 32.5 hours per week, 8:30-3:30 Monday to Friday (term time only) with a 0.5 hour unpaid lunch break.
The role involves:
- Assisting in areas of need
- Helping pupils to concentrate on and finish work set
- Meeting physical needs as required whilst encouraging independence
- Liaising with the classteacher and using the EHCP to develop appropriate resources to support the children
- Leading and maintaining positive and enjoyable break times for pupils including organising and participating in physical games and activities
The successful applicant will:
Have a passion for working with children
Have at least one year’s experience of working with children on the autistic spectrum
Be a team player who is able to demonstrate a willingness and ability to accept responsibility.
Assist with the planning of a range of interesting, age appropriate activities.
Help create engaging learning environments.
Have a keen eye for health and safety and safeguarding issues.
Be proactive, self-motivated and have an attention for detail.
Have an outgoing personality which is open and caring towards children.
Be respectful to each individual child and their learning journey with us and support them in reaching their full potential.
Build positive relationships with children, parents and colleagues.
Have a good, professional level of spoken and written English.
Having these qualifications would be desirable but not essential: - NNEB,NVQ/CACHE Level 3
Experience in the following areas is desirable: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder – ADHD; Severe Learning Difficulties – SLD; Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties – PMLD; Social, Emotional and Mental Health – SEMH; Experience of de-escalation techniques; Picture Exchange Communication (PECS) and Makaton.
