About us:

Led by Sir John Townsley, the nationally renowned GORSE Academies Trust has a central mission: to ensure that we play a significant role in removing the stubborn link between poverty and academic underperformance. We achieve this through providing all students, but particularly those who have the most challenging and complex backgrounds, with a rigorous and academic education which challenges and develops them not only academically, but also socially. We believe that this prepares them for life not only in Britain, but across the world.

We aspire for our young people to acquire the Gift of Choice; that is, the ability to actively choose their next steps at whatever age, rather than having avenues closed off to them as a consequence of a poor skillset or qualifications base. The impact of the work of our professionals can be clearly seen in the Trust’s performance. For example, in 2022–23, GORSE was the highest‑performing trust in the country (for trusts with five or more schools) for both whole cohort Progress 8 and disadvantaged Progress 8. Furthermore, the Trust is proud that all of its establishments (with the exception of those that are currently ungraded) are Ofsted Good or Outstanding. This success is only possible because of the exceptional members of staff and the tremendous support offered across the Trust.

Sport plays a central role in developing confidence, resilience and aspiration, and this is reflected in our Big 3 initiative: Volleyball, Rowing and Karate. These sports are embedded across curriculum and extra‑curricular provision, offering students meaningful opportunities to participate, compete and excel at local, regional and national level.

Volleyball is an established and highly successful programme within the Trust. Delivered across multiple academies and supported by strong external partnerships, including Leeds Gorse Volleyball Club, students benefit from high‑quality coaching, competitive pathways and opportunities to train alongside peers from across the Trust. Teams regularly compete at the highest national levels, with a number of students progressing to regional and national representation. The programme is inclusive, aspirational and firmly aligned with GORSE’s wider mission to open doors and expand life chances for young people.
