About Gretton Primary Academy and the Student Support Officer role
Gretton Primary School is looking for a compassionate, resilient and proactive Student Support Officer to join our team. This is a key pastoral role focused on helping children overcome the barriers that may prevent them from engaging fully in school and achieving their potential.
At the heart of the role is a commitment to supporting the whole child. You will build trusted relationships with pupils, taking time to understand what may be behind changes in their behaviour, attendance, engagement or wellbeing and working alongside them to find positive ways forward.
A key focus will be behaviour and attendance. You will work with pupils who may be finding aspects of school challenging, providing consistent support, encouragement and appropriate challenge to help them regulate their behaviour, develop positive attitudes to learning and improve their engagement with school.
You will also work closely with families, teaching staff and other professionals, recognising that effective partnership working is often essential in breaking down barriers and achieving lasting improvements for children.
The role will include:- Building positive, trusting and professional relationships with pupils.
- Identifying and helping to address barriers that are affecting a child's learning, attendance, behaviour or wellbeing.
- Providing targeted pastoral support and interventions for individual pupils and groups.
- Supporting children to understand and regulate their emotions and behaviour.
- Promoting positive behaviour, engagement and attitudes towards school.
- Monitoring attendance and working proactively with pupils and families where attendance or punctuality is a concern.
- Working with parents and carers to identify challenges and develop practical strategies for improvement.
- Supporting pupils through difficult periods or changes in their personal circumstances.
- Working collaboratively with teachers, school leaders, SEND colleagues and external professionals to ensure children receive joined-up support.
- Maintaining appropriate records and contributing to plans, reviews and meetings relating to pupils receiving additional support.
- Promoting safeguarding and ensuring the welfare of children remains at the centre of all decisions and actions.

Gretton Primary Academy is a small village school, which has a strong family feel. We currently have 147 pupils on roll, split into 6 classes. We are fortunate to have fantastic children and wonderfully supportive parents who enjoy getting involved with the life of the school. The school elected to become an academy and has joined the Brooke Weston Trust in September 2012. As such it now benefits from being part of a larger, extremely successful academic organisation and has access to facilities and opportunities beyond its normal scope, without losing its village identity.
The school works closely with other groups in the village, to make sure that we are at the heart of the community. We have good links with other primary schools in the area and work with them to ensure that our small schools benefit from some of the advantages of larger schools whilst maintaining their unique family nature.
The school has a creative curriculum which aims to inspire a love of learning and to develop children as self motivated, independent learners. We actively promote engaging, hands-on learning across the curriculum and also promote scientific enquiry and investigation.
Children at Gretton benefit from the outstanding teaching practice of our team alongside a welcoming open door policy in which parents are encouraged to discuss any concerns with their child's teacher on an informal basis. We believe that all children are individuals and every single child has their own strengths which we help them to develop.
